Hebrew Corner Eliezer Ben Yehuda Eliezer Ben Yehuda who was born in a Lithuanian hamlet about a hundred years ago to his father Yehuda Perlman was a diligent child with a remarkable memory. When he was Bar Mitzvah, his mother sent him to study at Yeshiva. Eliezer dis- tinguished himself in his studies and became deeply versed in the Torah and Talmud. The head of the Yeshiva who loved to read various books in Hebrew aroused in Eliezer an intense love of the Hebrew language. A year later Eliezer left the Yeshiva in order to attend • high • school. From there he traveled to Paris to study at 'Uni- versity. He intended to become a doctor. Eliezer signed his first article with the name Ben Yehuda and by this name he became known in Israel. Before emigrating one Palestine, Ben Yehuda made a vow ver to speak in any other language except Hebrew. In those days no one in the whole country spoke Hebrew regularly Ben Yehuda was isolated and Many Jews did not believe it was possible to find in Heb , which people had not spoken 31 of years, all the wo modern man. Then Yehuda de- cided to collect fr the literature of every age the rds and phrases, explain them compile a dic- tionary.
