Bible Text is Inspiration for Milhaud's New
Cantata to Open Music Festival Aug. 26

The Bible is the inspiration
and text for a new cantata for
mixed choir and chamber or-
ches-tra, "Bar Mitzvah Israel,"
specially composed by the
French-American compose r,
Darius Milhaud, for the opening
of the three week Israel First
Music Festival in Jerusalem on
Saturday evening, Aug. 26.
The new six; -
part cantata,
derived from
the books of
Deuteronomy
and Isaiah, is
cast in'the
form of a syn-
agogue Sab-
bath morning
service, though
it isn't written
as synagogue
music.
Milhaud,
who now re-
sides in Cali-
fornia where
he is a resi-
dent professor
of music at
Milhaud
Mills College,
will conduct the first perform-
ance of the new cantata leading
a chamber music group com-
posed of members of the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra and the
Rinat Choir. The Israel Music
Festival, jointly sponsored by
the America - Israel Cultural
Foundation and the Israel Gov-
ernment Tourist Agency, will
include 22 concerts in five Is-
raeli cities, concluding with a
concert in Tel-Aviv, Sept. • 18
at which Pablo Casals will play
and conduct.
Milhaud explains that the two
Biblical derivatives for his musi-
cal composition were chosen
because they are sections of
the Torah and the Haftorah
