It. Leslie Gourse of Providence,
R.I., is 22. She visited Israel
twice—before the Sinai campaign
in 1956 and again in 1959. Out
of her experiences she developed
the theme incorporated in her
full-length novel, "With Gall and
Honey," which has been pub-
lished by Doubleday.
Miss Gourse was the winner
of the 1959 Doubleday-Columbia
Option Award for the best par-
tial manuscript submitted in that
year. Her interesting novel, on
the basis . of which she received
the award, proves that she pos-
sesses literary skill.
"With Gall and Honey" is the
story of Andrea Mornatnai, a
New York Jewish girl of 18, who
leaves for a two-month Israeli
visit, bids goodbye to her father
and proceeds to befriend the
fellow-students who are on the
journey with her on the Israeli
boat. Her mother had died when
she was a youngster, but we
learn later that her mother, too,
before she married her father,
had been to Israel and had de-
voted herself to aiding the
refugees who came there.
On the boat, Andrea -befriends
and immediately falls in love
with a Venezuelan young Jew,
Luis Manuel, who is returning
to his kibbutz in Israel after a
visit with his family. - It's a love
affair at first sight, and they are
in each other's arms the first
night of their meeting.
The relationship continues in
Israel. They practically live to-

Luis dies, leaving Andrea to
look forward with ecstasy to the
baby. She goes to Elath, comes
back to Jerusalem to live,
"elated, with head erect." Before
going to Elath she explains to
Chave, who was an the boat with
her, that "love is a grand thing
when it concerns the tangible
flesh." Thus, "With Gall and
Honey" offers youth's definitions
of love — and introduces the
reader to modern youth's lack of
inhibitions and all-too-free ac-
tions.
The love affair with Luis is
only part of the story-. Andrea
also meets and befriends Anan
Reuveni, who had had a love
affair with her/mother while she
was in Israel. Apparently Anan
wishes to relive the love - affair
of more than 20 years ago with
the daughter of his former be-
loved. That portion is less con-
vincing.
Miss Gourse writes freely about
sex as well as life in Israel. She
blunders a bit when, in relating
the experiences of Andrea's
mother, tells about, her having
cared for refugees who had num-
bers tattooed on their arms in
concentration camps. The retro-
spect is unreal. Counting up the
years—Andrea's 18, the inter-
vening years before her mother's
marriage and the years she spent
in Israel, there could already
have been escapees from con-
centration camps with tattooed
arms in Israel. But this may be
an author's license, although that
error was unnecessary.
In "With Gall and Honey"
s Gourse does have occasio n
to late a bit about kibbutz li fe.
He ovel is most effective w hen

A bit too unreal is the speed
with which Miss Gourse throws
her heroine, unqu estioningly and
unhesitatingly, into the arms of
the first boy s he takes a liking
to on her se a voyage to Israel,
Miss Gourse nevertheless shows
genuine ab ility as a writer.
