JERUSALEM, (JTA)—In the
presence of President Izhak Ben-
Zvi and Prime-Minister David
Ben-Gurion — both former pri-
vates in the Jewish Legion —
Israel dedicated Beit Hagdudim,
the Jewish Legion center, at
Avihayil near Natanya, overlook-
ing the Plains of Sharon.
Ben-Gurion, who arrived at the
ceremonies in a helicopter, laud-
ed the thousands of Jewish youth
from countries all over the world
who had answered the call to
fight in the Jewish Legion.
The American delegation at the
ceremony brought to the new
Jewish Legion Center from New
York busts of the late Vladimir
Jabotinsky and Joseph Trumpel-
dor, founders and commanders of
the Legion. The busts are the
work of Jewish sculptor M. Rapa-
port who made the monument for
the Jewish Martyrs and Fighters
erected in Warsaw at the site of
the former ghetto.
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Seven
thousand Jewish immigrants are
expected to arrive in the United
States this year, it was an-
nounced by Lester Ginsburg, out-
going president of the New York
Association for New Americans.
Addressing the association's
12the annual dinner, Ginsburg
said the greater number of this
year's new Jewish arrivals is ex-
pected to settle in New York.
NYANA is the sole Jewish
agency responsible for the in- I

(At Ottawa, the C dian De-
partment of Citizenshi and Im-

gin" arrived in Canada.)
Ginsburg, in describing the
Jewish immigrant entering the
United States at this time, said
he represents "a new kind of
newcomer; he is more skilled,
more confidence, more realistic

and better equipped to adjust
quickly to American life than his

Nevertheless, Ginsburg noted,
"the prmesent new arrival, as
with the newcomers before' him,
still needs help to translate hope
into the actualities of home and
safety, job and self-support. in-
depedence and a new way of

security. How-
ever, during the same period, ex-
penditures have increased vastly,
the interest on the public debt
has gone up, tax receipts have
zoomed, and the country's over-
all deficit has also reached the
highest point in Israel's history.
The negative balance—the dif-
ference between total receipts
and total expenditures—has gone
up from minus 50,730,000 Israeli
pounds ($28,408,800) in 1950 to
minus 363,440,000 ($203,526,400)
as of March 31, 1961, the UN
data show. Israel's population, as
of mid-1959, is given as 2.061,000.
The country's employment in
manufacturing-rose from the in-
dex base of 100 in 1953 to 116
in 1959. Unemployment has fall-
en steadily from 17.7 percent in
1953 to 7.4 percent in 1959. In-
ustrial production grew from the
se figure of 100 in 1955 to 113
1960. The agricultural produc-
n index went up from 100 in
4-55 to 132 in 1958-59.
le rate of Israel's infant mor-
lity—always considered an in-
ex of a country's willingness or
ability to assume responsibility
for the health of its population—
shows what observers here note
as great progress. Israel's infant
mortality rate for the Jewish pop-
ulation has decreased steadily
from 36.3 in 1948 to 27.3 in 1959.
The figure is based on deaths of
infants under one year of age per
1,000 live births, excluding still-
births. Comparisons show that the
infant mortality rate in the
United States was 26.4; in Switz-
erland, 22.2; and in Britain, 23.1.
Israel had 4,323 physicians in
1958 and 1,387 dentists. This
means that there was approxi-
mately one doctor for each 462
persons in the Israeli population
—about twice the ratio in the
United States, where there is
one physician for about 900
persons.

Ten years ago, on May 1,
1951, the Israel Independence
Bond Issue was inaugurated.
Israel's Prime Minister David
Ben - Gurion himself launched
the Bond drive in Detroit. He
was greeted by Gov. Williams,
the late Mayor Albert Cobo and
other dignitaries and by en-
thusiastic thousands of citi z ens.
The Israel Bond campaign got
off to a brilliant start at a
City-wide dinner, and Detroiters
have bought more than $11,-
000,000 worth of Israel Bonds
since, in the last decade.
Max Osnos was the first
Detroit Israel Bond chairman
and Israel Davidson was hon-
orary chairman. Mrs. Theo-
dore Bargman was the initial
Women's Division chairman,
with Mrs. Joseph Ehrlich and
Mrs. Ralph Davidson as co-
chairmen.
During the first year of the
campaign, Detroit was host to
the late Vice President Alben
W. Barkley; Golda Meir, now
Israel Foreign .Minister, and
Yaacov Geri, Israel Minister of
Trade and Industry. Israel
Bond sales in 1951 totaled $2, 7
041,700.
The Bond Drive which was
already established in its sec-
ond year as a definite part of
communal activity, had- a fruit-
ful year in 1952. An important
innovation was the High Holy
Day Appeal in the synagogues
for the sale of Israel Bonds. In
1952 Israel Bond sales totaled
$1,214,750.
Sparking the drive here in
the second year were Abba
Eban, Edward G. Robinson, Sam
Levinson and Leon Keyserling.
In 1953, Women's Division
head Mrs. Bargman was aided
by Mesdames Milton Mahler,
Joseph Katchke and Harry
Kay, co-chairmen. Appearing
in Detroit for Israel Bonds
were Trygvie Lie, secretary-
general of the United Nations;
Israeli Ambassador Abba
Eban, Dr, Abraham Shan,
governor of Jerusalem; Isaac
Bavly, chief engineer of Is-
rael; Rep. Franklin D. Roose-
velt, Jr. ,and Robert Nathan.
Sales totaled $970,200 for the
year.
Phillip Stollman was general
chairman in 1954 when the
First Development Israel Bond
Issue was launched. Those who
made appearances in Detroit
were Mrs. Reuven Shiloah, wife
of the Israel Minister to the
U.S.; Jan Peerce, Rabbi Mor-
decai Kirshblum, Judith Ep-
stein, Senator Wayne Morse and
Golda Meir. Chairmen of the
events were Lou Berry, David
Safran, Mrs. Bargman, Nathan
Share, Lester Burton and Mor-
ris L. Schaver. Bond sales
