mann's "Symphony _ No. 4 for
String Orchestra." Hartmann is
known in Germany not only as
one of that - country's outstanding
composers but also as one of its
foremost proponents of the en-
couragement of yoing musicians.
During the Hitler period in
Germany, Hartmann might have
expected to continue his already
noteworthy career as a composer
without incident, since he is pure
Aryan. His wife, however, is a
Jewess; and one day she was
suddenly picked up and sent to a
concentration camp.
Hartmann took the next train
to the camp, presented himself
to its commander, and stated
that he would not leave as long
as his wife was there. Hartmann's
bravery and determination, cou-
pled with his prominence as a
figure in public life, caused con-
siderable embarraSSment to the
Hitler regime;'and in a few days
both Hartmanns were permitted
to leave.
