No Jewish football player has
ever gone higher in professional
ranks than Allie Sherman, re-
cently named as head coach of
the New York Giants, always a
football power.
Allie got a three-year con-

to a highly coveted position. He

self for five seasons, and was
by no means a star on his own.
He was thirdstring quarterback

sense it can also be a sign
of fertility. Others claim that
this tradition came about be-
cause fish was a delicacy which
many could not afford during
the week and the Sabbath table
called for the best of delicacies
to show that the Sabbath was
the most festive day of the
week. It is interesting to note
that the code (Magen Abraham,
Orach Hayyim, 242) orders
Jews not to eat fish on the Sab-
bath if t h e fish merchants
raised the price of fish beyond
limits.

The Dead Sea, long an attrac-
tion for tourists as well as a
source for Israel's potash and
other Minerals, may soon become
an important health center.
Healing sulphur springs have
been discovered at Ein Boker,
10 miles north of Sodom by the
shores of the Biblical-mentioned
Dead Sea. It has been reported
that the mineral springs have
proved highly effective in the
treatment of various skin dis-
orders for which until now no
remedy has been found.
A small sanitarium has been
established at Ein Baker • and
plans call for further develop-
ment of the region. In the north,
Tiberias' hot springs have long
been a source of comfort for
persons afflicted with such ill-
nesses as rheumatism and arthri-
tis.

1958 showed a mark of 115 and
1959 an output of 112. There is
no record yet for the year 1960,
but experts in the field say 1960
may show a slight increase over
the previous year. Interestingly
enough, the United States was
at the head of the queue in that
respect in 1959 with 40 Yiddish
books. Israel was next with 25,
Argentina with 22 and Poland
with ten. The Soviet Union of
course, was not on the map with
Yiddish books."

Nathan Ziprin, in his current
syndicated column, "On the Rec-
ord," makes these points to
prove that Yiddish still is mak-
g progress:
`Speaking of Yiddish I am re-
ded that it is quite prema-
to talk of the demise of
t tongue, as has been the
stom in recent years even in
ircles pretending concern for
the Yiddishpath. If books are
an index of the vitality of a
tongue we would have to say
that Yiddish is still a vital force
in the communities of the world,
Israel included. If Yiddish were
declining, it would be reflected
in a paucity of books. But the
fact is there has been no de-
cline in the publication of Yid-
dish books. In 1957 there ap-
peared 111 Yiddish books
throughout the world. The year
