The authorities at that time
took it for granted that Jews
should not perform military
duty by the side of Christians.
Following the old European tra
dition, they asked the Jews to
pay for their exemption.
Levy, as a valiant defender of
Jewish rights, energetic and self
confident, insisted that he—un-
less he be found physically dis-
qualified—would bear arms and
would not pay the tax. And,
after a/long, bitter struggle,
Asser Levy won his fight. To-
gether with other Jews, he stood
guard along with the Christian
residents of New Amsterdam.
In European Holland, the
Jews enjoyed little economic
freedom and were kept out of
certain trades; the same restric-
tions were placed on them in
New Amsterdam •
Again Asser Levy cour-
ageously stepped forward,
fought these harsh measures
relentlessly, and won for him-
self ,the right to open a butch-
er shop; but it took a long
time and endless appeals to
the directors of th _ e Dutch
Company until the Jews at-
tained the right to trade in
furs, whether in the lower
part of the colony, now New
Jersey, or the upper part as
far as Albany.
