Mumfordites came in for
their share of prizes this week
as they took ten achievement
'keys, 14 honorable mentions,
and six commendations , in the
Detroit News Scholastic Writ-
ing Awards.
Winning keys were Gerald
Fife and Marjory Miller (short
short stories) ; Roger Kukes
(poetry); Ben. Craine (radio
adaptation); Sheila Fishman
(radio-general program); Bob
Rosen (o riginal one act
play); Judi Klein (news story);
Barbara Quint (editorial); Sue
Kobel (interview) ; and Ann
Jacobowitz (column).
Those receiving honorable
mention were Stephen Brown,
Margaret Burton, Landra Epp-
stein, Sheila Fishman, Frances
Frumin, Ann Jacobowitz (3),
Sue Kobel, Nancy Kraft, Rena
Pokempne r, and Barbara
Quint. (2).
Commendations went to San-
dra Acker, Sharon Doubleday,
Gerald Fife, Frank Lipson, Joel
Schavrein, and Julian Smith.
In the Junior Division Jeffrey
Stone was awarded an honor-
able mention.
Linda Plein has been named
editor-in-chief of the Capri for
next year, and is now in the
process of selecting department
editors. Already singled out for
assignments are Roslyn Meli-
kien (department editor) and
Ronnie Schneider (Sports).
Copies of this year's Capri,
the first in Mumford's history
to feature art work, are still
available from any staff mem-
ber of the Capri business office.
Student Council has set May
5 as the date for their record
hop, "The Noise."
The girls' swimming team
evened their record at two wins
and two losses as they defeated
Mackenzie, 79-48. Carol Bruno
took two firsts as she continued
to _ shine as the mermaids'
brightest star.

Newhart's Fresh
Comedy to Get
Airing in Detroit

Bob Newhart, button - down
mind et. al., will make his first
appearance in Detroit, 8:30
p.m., April 8, at the Ford Audi-
torium.
Newhart is currently on a
nation - wide tour. Appearihg
with him will be the Chad
-Mitchell Trio,
one of the
finest folk
groups in the
country..
Newhart is
a n overnight
comedy sensa-
tion, having
entered show
business as re-
cently as a
year ago. He
first recorded
his wares in a
series of five-
Newhart
minute r a d i'o
tapes which came -to the atten-
tion of a Chicago disc jockey
who, in turn, brought them be-
fore the Warners Brothers Rec-
ords Corporation.
They liked what they heard,
booked Newhart into some local
Chicago nightclubs for "polish-
ing" and then recorded his now-
famous "Button-Down Mind of
Bob Newhart."
Last year he appeared in
nightclubs throughout the na-
tion including Chicago's "Mr.
Kelly's" and his television ex-
posure includes guest shots on
the Garry Moore Show; with
Jack Parr; an appearance o
the Emmy Sho_w from Hol
wood and the syndicated P
boy Penthouse program.

Kay Britten Is
Featured Folk

Singer
at Galerie

Kay Britten, popular folk
singer, will appear at the Cafe
Galerie April 4-14, announces
owner Tzvi Wachtel, who also
is manager of the star.
Miss Britten, a native of Lon-
don, makes her home in Detroit.
She won acclaim as a member
of the London Players' Theater

music on Detroit's WWJ.
From there, she went on to
