Robin to Herald
Michigan Week
Michigan's proud and chesty
robin takes on a new look this
year as he heralds the approach
of the 1961 Michigan Week to
be observed next May 21-27.
This year the state's official
bird, who has been the symbol of
seven previous state celebrations,
is pictured with a new band lead-
er's cap as he leads the parade
with a banner proclaiming the
1961 slogan, "Michigan Marching
Forward," which was adopted by
the Michigan Week organization
after being suggested by Gov-
ernor John B. Swainson.
The map of Michigan appears
to the right of the robin. The
emblem will. be used on all ad-
vertising and promotional ma-
terials, and through every avenue
of communication it will be seen
by millions before the year ends.
Labor Secretary Reaffirms
His Support of Israel
CHICAGO, (JTA) — A strik-
ing reaffirmation of his .faith
in Israel as "a great symbol of
democracy" and his belief in
the value of American Jewish
philanthropy was voiced by
Arthur J. Goldberg on the eve
of his assumption of office as
United States Secretary of
Labor.
The occasion was a dinner in
his honor tendered by the Com-
bined Jewish Appeal of Greater
Chicago in which Goldberg has
long been active.
"I have not- changed my views,
no matter what my job is to be,
of the value of the work of the
Combined Jewish Appeal here
and overseas — and the values
to mankind which lie in tha
great symbol of democracy, I
rael, our friend and ally in th
part of the world," ' Goldbe
declared.
More than 1,500 leaders in
the labor union movement in
Government circles and public
affairs attended the dinner. A
hand-illuminated copy of a reso-
lution lauding Goldberg as "a
champion of human rights an
a man whose life is devoted
democratic ideals for peop
everywhere," was presented
the incoming Labor Secreta
at the dinner.
