Israel's Paratroopers Hold Negev Exercise
Israel to Accelerate Jordan Irrigation Project

JERUSALEM. — Work on the
national irrigation project in-
volving diversion of Jordan
River waters is being acceler-
ated and construction of a 6,-
000,000 pound pumping station
is scheduled to begin soon on
the shore of the sea of Galilee
for the project, it was disclosed
Tuesday.
The production of 100 eight-
inch steel-reinforced concrete
pipes which will serve as main
conductors of Jordan River
water also is being speeded up
at the Yuval Gad factory at
Ashkelon. Plans call for a total
of 10 miles of the giant pipes
to be produced this year, but
completion of the entire project
will require several years.
Six construction firms, includ-
ing several in other countries,
submitted bids for building the
pumping station which is sched-
uled to be completed in 30
months. The government is ex-
pected to choose a contractor
next week. Work also is pro-
ceeding on channels and tun-
nels in which the giant pipes
will be placed.

TEL AVIV. — Israel's army
paratroopers are holding large
scale exercises in the hills cf
the Negev, it was announced
by the Defense Ministry here
Tuesday.
Gen. Haim Laskov, Chief of
Staff of Israel's armed forces,
visited the troops and praised
their "efficiency and devotion.'
Gen. Laskov watched the troops
"attack" an objective while
American recoilless . anti-tank
guns were conducting their own
"defense against the enemy."
Prime Minister Ben-Gurion,
who is also Minister of Defense,
will visit the troops and observe
the exercises before they are
concluded, the Ministry stated.
