ROME, (JTA)—Italy's Olym-
pics Committee assured the
Israel Olympic Committee that
Italy will refuse to participate
in the scheduled Mediterranean
Regional Olympiad, if Israel
is excluded from participation.
The issue was taken up by
the Israelis with the Interna-
tional Olympics Committee. The
latter has, however, as yet not
acted on Israel's request for
barring the International Olym-
piad's approval of the Medi-
terranean games, unless the
sponsors of those games agree
to two rules that are basic to
an Olympiad under offici
ognizance. These
are:

of research pediatrics at the
University of' Cincinnati.
His predecessor in the field
of polio vaccine was Dr. Jonas
Salk, who developed a dead-

first protection against the
dreaded disease. Dr. Salk's vac-

throughout the world.
The advantage of Dr. S'abin's
vaccine is that it can be given
orally. Dr. Salk's vaccine must
be injected by needle.

E, (JTA) — A nu er

youth ottavia,
center of the Rome Jewish quar-
ter.
It turned out, however, that
the men attacked were not
fascists at all, but "extras" be-
ing used by an Italian film
producer shooting a new pic-
ture, "Joy of Living," intended
to reproduce the racial persecu-
tions that took place in this
very section of the city under
the fascist regime.
When Jews saw the black-
shirted men strutting around
the neighborhood, excitement
spread through , the quarter.
Some Jewish youths did not
wait to investigate—they simply
started beating up the extras.
The film shooting schedule was
terrupted, and squads of po-
e patrolled the area to make
e there were no further as-

Direct Parleys With
Arabs to Halt Boycott
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress to-
day called on the State Depart-
ment to initiate direct discus-
sion with the member states of
the Arab League aimed at halt-
ing their boycott of American
business firms dealing with Is-
rael.
In a telegram to Secretary
Christian A. Herter, Dr. Joachim
Prinz, president of the AJ Con-
gress, expressed gratification
that the department had pro-
tested boycott threats against
United States businessmen by
the government of Kuwait. But
he charged that the "main
thrust of the Arab campaign"
is directed by the Central Boy-
cott Office of the League of
Arab States in Damascus, Syria.
"Any serious protest must
therefore be directly lodged
with the states comprising the
Arab League rather than with
a sheikdom which is doing the
Arab League's bidding," Dr.
Prinz declared .
