Danny Raskin's 'Bronze JWV Medal for Gubow

LISTENING

T

Lawrende G u b o w, Commis-
sioner of the Michigan Corpora-
tion and Securities Commission,
was awarded the Jewish War
Veterans' Bronze Medal of Mer-
it, the second highest award in
the organization, at the JWV
convention in Miami Beach.
JWV's national awards chair-
man, William Carmen, pointed
out that Gubow has been par-
ticularly active in the case in-
volving Grosse Pointe, where,
in order to qualify for residence,
Jews had to score 85% or 85
points, South Europeans (in-
cluding Italians, Greeks, Span-
iards and Lebanese) 75%, Poles
55%, and all others 50%, ex-
cept that there was no estab-
lished passing score for Negroes
or Orientals.
Gubow ruled that these ac-
tions constitute unfair dealing
and will subject real estate
brokers to the possibility of
suspension or revocation of li-
cense.
In presenting the award to
Gubow, Carmen pointed out that
Gubow's action was a far-reach-
ing decision. He said, "We of
the Jewish War Veterans offer
this award as a tangible evi-
dence that we agree with Mr.
Gubow's decision, and we be-
lieve that it is one which will

go down in history in the steps
of freedom."'
Dr. Frances R. Horwich,
noted childen's educational
authority, and famed for her
nationally televised "D i n g
Doug School" program, was
the recipient of JW V A's "Wo-
man of the Year" award.
The JWV was asked to
launch a counter-boycott of
goods from Arab League na-
tions.
Dr. Seymour. S. Weisman, of
Norwalk, Conn., lecturer at the
Graduate School of Public Ad-
ministration, New York Univer-
sity, who also serves as JWV
program consultant to the Jew-
ish War Veterans, and Abraham
Kraditor, of Brooklyn, past na-
tional commander and chairman
of JWV's foreign affairs corn-
mitte, presented the plan for
the counter-boycott to the dele-
gates. '
Three candidates have thrown
their hats into the ring for the
coveted post of national com-
mander, which will be decided
Sunday at the 65th annual con-
vention of JWV. They are I. L.
Feuer of Youngstown, Daniel
Neal Heller, of Miami Beach,
and Joseph Solomonow, of Los
Angeles.
