mann hunters. On the streets
of Tel Aviv people scoffed and
called him a "Don Quixote."

addressed him as "Mr. Eich-
mann" because of his preoccu-
pation. But Friedmann went on
studying every morsel of infor-
mation at his private documen-
tation center in Haifa.
Friedmann and other docu-
mentation experts sometimes
clashed with Israel government
authorities at the Government
documentation center, Yad Vas-
hem, in Jerusalem. They term-
ed the center "stagnant and
bureaucratic." They goaded,
nagged, persevered. Eichmann
had to be caught.
Just before leaving for Wash-
ington, Friedmann spent hour
after hour with Israeli police
researchers preparing the case
against Eichmann. He briefed
them from the depths of his
vast expertness on Eichmann.
Friedmann believed that
Eichmann had to be caught
and punished not because of
hatred or emotional considera-
tions. It was simply that a Jew
could not live with the knowl-
edge that the most guilty living
