The question of closing the
schools in Oak Park during the
three Jewish High Holy Days
had been batted around by com-
mittees of the Oak Park Schools
and by its Board of Education
for several years before action
was taken earlier this month to
officially shut the schools on
these days.
In a statement this w e e k,
Clifton A. - Eldridge, assistant
superintendent of schools, ad-
vised that the schools are not
closing for the holiday but be-
cause of it.
He added that it is "educa-
tionally a n d administratively
unsound" to keep the schools
open when such a large per-
centage of the student body and
faculty is out because of the
holidays.
Eldridge's statement . should
allay any suspicions that there
is in the school closing any dan-
ger of a church-state contro-
versy.
Jews, as a group, have al-
ways fought against any trend
which might endanger this
historic principle, and, should
the school closings have in-
dicated that there was an
infringement on this rule of
thumb, it would have been
