Tours leave downtown Miam
Beach for commercial attrac
l tions featuring fish, birds, ani
mals, orchids and the two majo r
parks in the area. Both the lat
ter, Fairchild Tropical Garden
and the Everglades Nationa
Park, are free.
i Fairchild Garden maintains
an extensive collection of palms
and other plants brought here
from all parts of the tropic
world. The Everglades park, on
the other hand, is designed to
preserve native plants, animal
and bird life that includes ma
hogany and palms, alligators
and orchids, egrets and wood
bits.
Fishing and boating go to
gether, and there are few places
anywhere that can offer finer
waters for marine outings. The
fishing ranges from bait casting
off piers and bridges through
light tackle fun in bays and in-
lets to deep-sea trolling for sail-
fish, marlin, dolphin and other
big game found in and near the
Gulf Stream.
Greens fees at the city golf
courses are $3.50 in winter, and
tennis courts may be rented by
the hour at nominal p r i c e s.
Much of the entertainment at
the civic centers and the recrea-
tion in the city parks, such as
shuffleboard and other games,
is free.

Philadelphia Schools
to Check History Texts

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Teaching methods and textbook
contents in all Philadelphia pub-
lic, junior and senior high
schools will be surveyed as a
result of disclosures that his-
tory textbooks failed to give
adequate reports on the Hitler
era, particularly the anti-Jewish
atrocities of the 'Nazi move-
ment. .
David A. Horowitz, associate
superintendent of schools, has
been named to make the survey
which is expected to take two
to three weeks. The survey will
begin with an examination of ,
the material teachers are re-
quired to present in the schools.
A study of the texts currently
in use in these schools will
follow.
Special attention will be
given to teacher and textbook
coverage of segregation and de-
segregation, the Nazi era, civil
and religious rights, immigra-
tion policies, Communism and
similar areas of study.

Communities Urged
to Preserve Records

BALTIMORE, (JTA)—An ur-
gent plea to American Jews to
set up committees to find Jew-
ish re co rd s of "trials, the
tragedies and the achievements"
of the American Jewish com-
munity emerged from the 58th
annual meeting of the Amer-
ican Jewish Historical Society.
Dr. Bertram W. Korn, presi-
dent of the society, said the
creation of such committees was
"a sacred responsibility" of the
Society. Citing the disappear-
ance of local records, Dr. Korn
said that "our people can never
learn their history and feel its
drama and the understanding it
teaches unless these sources are
located and safeguarded."
He reported that state or re-
gional Jewish historical groups
have been .set up in Michigan,
Rhode Island. -a/nd California
and that local 'groups- were be-
ing organized in Chicago, Phil-
adelphia and Baltimore.
