Anti-Israel Bias in James Morris' Hashemite Kings'
As in his earlier book, "Islam
Inflamed," James Morris' "The
Hashemite Kings", published by
Pantheon Books (333 6th Ave.,
N. Y. 14), is biased against
Israel.
Morris. a Middle East corres-
pondent for British and Ameri-
can newspapers, certainly knows
the area and is well equipped
to relate a wholesome story. But
there is a regrettable colora-
tion that is harmful to Israel.
It is evident that he Misstates
facts when dealing with Zion-
and Israel.
For instance, in his discris-sion
of the role of the Jewish
Agency, he states most of the
facts correctly, but there is a
contradiction as well as a mis-
statement of fact when he
writes:
"At the end of the war
Palestine sank precipitously
toward anarchy. Encouraged
by the Americans, impelled
by the ghastly conditions of
eastern Europe, hundreds of
thousands of Jews made their
way to their promised land.

pressed by the State Depart-
ment, opened wide the doors
of legal immigration. The
Jewish Agency chartered
many an illegal passage . . ."
Even the British, whose ob-
structions prevented Jews from
entering Palestine while there
was a British Mandatory Gov-
ernment in the country, un-
doubtedly will laugh at this
statement. It is a matter of rec-
ord that Jews—not the Jewish
Agency, which was compelled
to cooperate with the British—
individual Jews were compelled
to charter illegal boats, most of
them unseaworthy, ir. order to
rescue Jews from Nazi brutal-
ities. That was necessary be-
cause the British had shut the
doors to Jews to whom they
were committed in the Balfour
Declaration to establish a Jew-
ish National Home.
When, therefore, a foreign
correspondent speaks of Britain
having admitted hundreds of
thousands of Jews, the reader
who knows the facts will begin
to wonder where this correspon-
dent has been, whether he now
hails from the Grand Mufti's
classes and whether he is aware
of the misstatements he makes
in a book published by a very
reputable publishing house.
The usual nonsense about
Zionists working "powerfully"
to attain their ends is uttered
by Morris. The picture he paints
is historically misleading, since
he fails to take into account
historic rights and the justice
of "promises" he seeks to be-
little.
The anti-Israel argument
that American Jews exerted
pressure in support of Zion-
ism and that liberals "rarely
grasped the arguments of the
Arabs" is used time and again
in this biased book. The Is-
raeli war of liberation is not
portrayed as a battle for self-
defense against Arabs who
launched the war, but rather
in a spirit that is always re-
flected in comments such as
"under pressure of New York
Zionists."
