at 6 p.m., Dec. 20, at Cong. Beth

The local celebration, spon-

offices in Detroit, will.be one of
many observances held by Reb
Zalman's disciples.
The principal event will be
held in Brooklyn, N. Y., the
seat of ' the present head of
Chabad, the Lubavitche : Rebbe,
Menachem Mendel Schneerson,
a direct descendant of Rabbi
Zalman and the seventh gen-
eration of Chabad leadership.
Hundreds of Hassidim will
attend the celebration, which
is marked as a day of dedica-
tion and festivity in all Hassidic
Circles.
Locally, the dinner has been
planned by Rabbi Sholom B.
Shemtov, regional director of
the Merkos, which has as its
major purpose the dissemina-
tion of literature for the home,
school and synagogue. The or-
ganization also forms adult
study groups and sabbath
groups for children.

vitcher movement is tbe Tzeirei

JERUSALEM—Principals of
Israel elementary schools staged
a one-day strike Wednesday to
back demands that principals
over 50 years of age should have
their work-week cut from 30 to
28 hours. Teachers over 50 in
the schools have such work ar-
rangements. -
The demand was rejected by
the Ministry of Education which
considers it unjustified. The
Ministry contended that func-
tions of the principals were ad-
ministrative and that all civil
'service personnel work the same
hourS until 65, when they are
pensionable.
The strike, approved by the
Teachers' Association, is to be
resumed indefintely if the de-
mand is not met, representa-
tives of the principals said. -
The- teachers' struggle in sec-
ondary schools for regrading to
higher pay scales led to an ex-
pansion of • a government-ap-
pointed committee which is in-
vestigating the problem. The
expansion, by appointment of
additional members, took place
at the last Israel Cabinet meet-
ing after the high -s c h ool
teachers boycotted the the or-
iginal committee. The teachers
charged that the committee was
political and unqualified to
handle the problem.

pitals, homes for aged and other

• Chabad Hassidism, which
takes its name from the Hebrew
words "chochreah, binah and
daat — wisdom, understanding
and knowledge" of the holiness
of God,. Israel and Torah—was
organized by Rabbi. Zalman fol-
lowing the death of the Baal.
Shem Tov, originator of the
assidic movement, in 1773.
Disciples of the. Magid of
Mezeritch, as the Baal Shem
Tov was known, were sent on
missions. throughout Eastern
Europe. Rabbi Zalman was
given the responsibility of, cap-
turing the stronghold of the
Misnagdim in Lithuania. .
The main opposition to Rabbi
Zalman was that his philosophy
represented the "Tzadik," the
teacher, as a spiritual guide
rather than as a miracle
worker.
It 'was his sincerity and fair-
ness that began winning fol-
lowers all over the land. It was
these same qualities that caused
his opposition to denounce him
and have him turned over to the
Russian officials. .
Hassidim have recorded that
joicing- and re-dedication to the
ideals of his work.
Followers of Rabbi Zalman
today, through the Lubavitcher
movement, can be found in
many sections of the world, in-
cluding France, England, Aus-
tralia, Africa, .South America,
Canada and all parts of the
United States.

Dear Friend,
•
You are cordially invited to attend the annual dinner
of the Merkos ,L'Inyonei Chinuch in honor of the great
Chassidic Festival, "Yud Tes Kislev" (19th day of Kislev),
Sunday, December 20th, at Congregation Beth Shmuel,
Dexter corner of Buena Vista, at 6:00 P.M.
.
This is the "Day of Liberation" of the founder of
Chabad, ,Rabbi 'Schneur Zalman of Liady, author of the
Tanya and Shulcan Aruch. Rabbi Schneur Zalman's release
from imprisonment (in the year 5559-1798) for the dissemi-
nation of the ideology and way of life of General Chassid-
ism as a whole and Chabad Chassidism in particular. In
the last two centuries Chabad-Lubavitch has inspired
Judaism and served as a beacon of light during the darkest
periods of European-Jewish history. Today, the teachings
of Chabad have reached the remotest corners of the globe
including: Scandinavia, Africa, Australia and South Amer-
ica. "Yud Tes Kislev" has really become a universal Jewish
festival.
Come and spend the evening in a rich spiritual atmo-
sphere befitting this great day. Our program will be
enriched by colored movies and slides of various aspects
of Jewish life on this continent and abroad, in our Holy
Land, Australia, Italy, Morocco and Denmark. Our guest
speaker will be Rabbi Solomon Hecht of Chicago. As a
member of the Rabbinate and representative of the world
renowned Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Hecht has contributed
greatly towards the spiritual preservation of Chicago
Jewry. He is a great scholar and an outstanding orator.
The proceeds of this dinner will help the relief and
rehabilitation work of the Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch
throughout the world.
