Yom Kippur Yizkor Service's Bible Origin

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
Why is it customary to have
memorial services for the de-
parted (Yizkor) on Yom Kip-
pur (The Day of Atonement)?

Yom Kippur is that the thought
of the dead will serve to hum-
ble the living. Nothing breaks
the haughtiness of man like the
realization of the eventual des-
tiny of his physical remains. It
is also claimed that the dead
are mentioned on Yom Kippur
so that they will in turn offer
prayers for the living (Zohar
Exodus 16b).

They trace it to Roman times
when the .Romans considered
the utterance of this expression
as an act of rebellion against
the Caesars, since it implied
that Jews would not accept the
absolute rule of the Caesars.
Jews were thus forced to utter
this expression silently. It was,

given is that the expression is
chanted silently throughout the
year because it was originally
