Why is it customary to have
memorial services for the de-
parted (Yizkor) on Yom Kip-
pur (The Day of Atonement)?

Yom Kippur is that the thought
of the dead will serve to hum-
ble the living. Nothing breaks
the haughtiness of man like the
realization of the eventual des-
tiny of his physical remains. It
is also claimed that the dead
are mentioned on Yom Kippur
so that they will in turn offer
prayers for the living (Zohar
Exodus 16b).
