Arabs Fear German
Support for Israel;
Doubt Mid-East War
LONDON, (WJA) — West
German diplomats in the Middle
East currently "have their
hands full" to dispel Arab fears
of further West German finan-
cial support for Israel," writes
the Cairo correspondent of the
official West German News
Agency. He claims it "arose
after the visit recently paid to
Chancellor Adenauer in Bonn
by Dr. Nahum Goldmann."
President Nasser, he contin-
ties, has opened a campaign
against Israel with some "mas-
sive statements", warning
among others that Israel "will
never be allowed to use the
Suez Canal. "Despite these
strong words, war nevertheless
is ruled out by observers here,
the Cairo correspondent con-
cludes.
"Nasser himself, when visi-
tors recently asked him how he
visualized a solution of the Is-
rael question, confessed: 'I
really don't know either'."

LONDON. — British Prime
Minister Harold Macmillan
Tuesday night received outgoing
Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath
in a 45-minute talk which em-
phasized the excellent relations
between the two countries.
While current Middle East-
ern and British-Israel matters
were reportedly reviewed, the
meeting, which was the envoy's
official farewell to the Prime
Minister, was devoted largely to
an exchange of good wishes.
The Prime Minister reportedly
showed keen interest in Elath's
plans and invited him and Mrs.
Elath to revisit Britain at some
future date.
The lengthy visit, sandwiched
into the Prime Ministe r's
jammed pre-election timetable.
indicated both the solidity of
personal relations between the
two statesmen and the current
satisfactory Anglo-Israel rela-
tions, according to diplomatic
circles.
Elath has represented Israel
in Britain during the time of
three Prime Ministers—Winston
Churchill, Anthony Eden and
Macmillan—a time during which
there occurred the Suez crisis,
and a major change in Anglo-
Israel relations.
Many dinners and receptions
were being planned for the
farewell for the Elaths. The
diplomatic corps is expected to
sponsor a special event since
Elath is currently the Acting
Dean of the Diplomatic Corps
at the Court of St. James.
