Menasha Skulnik, who broke
all existing attenclence records
at Northland Playhouse last
year, returns to the Northland
stage this Tuesday night, open-
ing in his new Broadway-bound
comedy, "The Law and Mr.
Simon."
Skulnik has had a unique
career in the American theater
ever since cavorting on the
stages of Yiddish theaters in
New York's East Side.
A master mime, he delighted
the regular theater-goers as
much as the
immigrant,
proving t h e
universality
of humor. In
addition to his
stage activi-
ties, Skulnik
was, for 15
years, the
"Uncle David"
on radio's
Skulnik
"The Gold-
bergs."
It wasn't until recent years
that he made his Broadway
debut. It was an auspicious one
in "The Fifth Season," in which
he played for two years. He be-
came known to a larger audi-
ence and eventually scored in
television. His own show was
entitled "Menasha the Magnifi-
cent."
Skulnik's humor is founded
on everday human experience,
and it is his special approach
to life's vagaries, sometimes
tinged with pathos and whimsy,
that makes his appeal so wide
spread.
In 1957 authoress Julie Berns
wrote "Uncle Willie" especially
for Menasha, and he once again
triumphed on Broadway. Now,
Miss Berns has again written a
vehicle for her favorite funny
man.
"The Law and Mr. Simon"
concerns itself with an immi-
grant bookbinder who has a
great reverence for the law.
Anna Roman plays the book-
binder's warm-hearted and curi-
ous wife, a role in which she is
right at home, for in private
life. Miss Roman is Mrs.
Skulnik.
