—Old Family Stores—
Announce Merger
Announcement ,w a s made
this week by James Wineman,
president of Peoples Outfitting
Co.. and Harold L. Kaplan,
president of State Sample Co.,
of the Merger of the two firms.
The stores, situated next
door to each other on Michi-
gan Ave.. between Shelby and
Griswold. will now go under
the name of Peoples Outfitting-
State Sample Co., with Kaplan
serving as president.
Wineman and Eugene Arn-
feld, People's executive vice-
president, will serve in advi-
sory capacities.
Peoples Outfitting dates back
to 1893, when Leopold Wine-
man opened the store at its
present location. After his
death in 1925, operation of the
store was continued by his
sons. Henry and Andrew Wine-
man.
Andrew died in 1954, and
Henry Wineman headed the
firm until his death in 1957,
when James Wineman, his
son. became president.
The store's popularity
boomed early in the century
when Leopold Wineman intro-
duced in Detroit the idea of
installment buying. The origi-
nal store was expanded in
1915. and again in 1925.
State Sample, also a family
store, was started by the late
Barney Kaplan in 1932 as a
furniture store on Elizabeth
St.' When the store moved to
Michigan Ave., it added cloth-
ing lines and other merchan-
dise. Only this March, the store
was completely remodeled to
provide 48.000 square feet of
selling space.

Arthur Fleischman will be
a special guest at the Ameri-
can National Exhibition which
opens on July 25 in Moscow.
The Detroiter, in the carpet
business here for 35 years,
was responsible for obtaining
5,000 square feet of beige car-
peting for the fine arts display
at the Moscow exhibition.
At the invitation of Harold
C. McClellan, general manager
of the exhibition, Fleischman
will travel to Russia, at his
own expense, to serve as
"technical consultant" when
the carpeting is presented.
Fleischman, who was in-
formed about the need for
carpeting by his son, Law-
rence, whose art works have
been widely traveled for the
U.S. Information Office, ob-
tained both the carpet and
the padding from mills with
which he deals.
While in Russia. Fleischman
plans to visit his native vil-
lage of Kanentz in the
Ukraine.
