Kaplan, president of State Sample Co., of the Merger of the two firms. The stores, situated next door to each other on Michi- gan Ave.. between Shelby and Griswold. will now go under the name of Peoples Outfitting- State Sample Co., with Kaplan serving as president. Wineman and Eugene Arn- feld, People's executive vice- president, will serve in advi- sory capacities. Peoples Outfitting dates back to 1893, when Leopold Wine- man opened the store at its present location. After his death in 1925, operation of the store was continued by his sons. Henry and Andrew Wine- man. Andrew died in 1954, and Henry Wineman headed the firm until his death in 1957, when James Wineman, his son. became president. The store's popularity boomed early in the century when Leopold Wineman intro- duced in Detroit the idea of installment buying. The origi- nal store was expanded in 1915. and again in 1925. State Sample, also a family store, was started by the late Barney Kaplan in 1932 as a furniture store on Elizabeth St.' When the store moved to Michigan Ave., it added cloth- ing lines and other merchan- dise. Only this March, the store was completely remodeled to provide 48.000 square feet of selling space. The Detroiter, in the carpet business here for 35 years, was responsible for obtaining 5,000 square feet of beige car- peting for the fine arts display at the Moscow exhibition. At the invitation of Harold C. McClellan, general manager of the exhibition, Fleischman will travel to Russia, at his own expense, to serve as "technical consultant" when the carpeting is presented. Fleischman, who was in- formed about the need for carpeting by his son, Law- rence, whose art works have been widely traveled for the U.S. Information Office, ob- tained both the carpet and the padding from mills with which he deals. While in Russia.
