Israel Bond Organization Welcomes
General Weizmann Monday; Retiring
Bond Leaders to Be Accorded honors

Detroit's Israel Bond Organi-
zation, looking forward to a
record year in Bond sales in
1959, will welcome Gen. Ezer
Weizmann, commander of the
Israel Air Force, nephew of the
late Dr. Chaim Weizmann, first
President of Israel, and the son
of the late Chilik Weizmann,
one of Israel's distinguished
leaders, at a dinner at the
Sheraton - Cadillac Hotel, on
Monday evening.
Heartened by the quick re-
sponse to the invitations is-
sued for the dinner, Tom
Borman, chairman of the 1959
Bond drive here, urged those
desiring to attend to take ad-
vantage of a number of in-
vitations still available and to
call the Bond office, WO. 2-
5091, to secure dinner accom-
modations.
Max Osnos has accepted the
chairmanship of the dinner in
honor of Gen.
Weizmann.
Osnos was the
first chairman
of Israel Bond
drives in De-
troit and has
remained one
of the active
leaders in
cal bond
drives since
Osnos
1951.
Honors will be extended at
the dinner to the retiring chair-
man of last year's Israel Bond
drive. Abe Kasle, and the retir-
ing chairman of the Women's
Division, Mrs. Philip Helfman.
Mrs. Max Stollman will be
honored by being named De-
troit's sixth Woman of Valor,
in recognition of her efforts
for the Israel Bond drives.
Gene Weizmann is a 35-year-
old "Sabra" — a native of
Israel. Formerly a Fighter
Wing Commander and Chief of
Operations of the Israel Air
Force, he is one of Israel's out-
standing flying heroes, having
distinguished himself as a fight-
er pilot with the RAF. in the
War of Liberation and then in
the Sinai Campaign.
After completing his ser-
vice with the RAF, at which
time he saw action in North
Africa, he returned to Pales-
tine in 1947 when he started
building an air force for the
Haganah, the Jewish defense

perience necessary for the
test that came in the Arab in-
vasion of Israel and the sub-
sequent War of Liberation.
In 1948, when Israel's inde-
pendence was proclaimed, Gen.
Weizmann rose to the command
of the first fighter squadron,

which then consisted of a few
obsolete World War II fighter
planes.
After completing his studies
in England at the RAF Staff
College in 1951. Gen. Weizmann
returned to Israel to establish
the first Staff and Command
Course of the Israel Air Force.

Bond Sales in Detroit in 1959

A record year in Israel Bond thus far, cash purchases and
sales was predicted this week, pledges already amount to S445.-
with the announcement that, 000, as compared with $278.000
at the same time of year in
1958.
The announcement of the in-
creasing interest in Israel Bond
activities was made last Thurs-
day evening. at a parlor meeting
at the home of the 1959 chair-
man of the Detroit Israel Bond
organization. Tom Borman.
At that meeting. at which
David Safran presided. S131.000
in Bond sales and pledges were
announced.
Borman greeted the gathering
and the guest speaker was
Samuel R o t h b e r g. national
chairman of Sponsors for Israel
Bonds. president of Israel In-
dustrial Corporation. a United
Jewish Appeal national leader.

Teachers with More Than 25 Years
Service to Be Honored at Annual
Hebrew Schools Meeting June 16

Members of the teaching
staff of the United Hebrew
Schools who have served the -
schools for more than 25 years
will be honored at the UHS
annual meeting, at 8:15 p.m.,
Tuesday, June 16, in the Esther
Berman Auditorium.
Citations will be presented
to the teachers by Abe Kasle,
retiring president of the
schools.
Kasle's annual report as
president and Albert Elazar's
report as superintendent will
he among the features of the
meeting.
Election of officers will
follow these reports, the fol-
lowing being the nominees:
Mandel Berman, president;
David Safran, Louis LaMed
and Judge Ira G. Kaufman,
vice presidents; Jack Shenk-
man, secretary: Harold Rob-
inson, treasurer: Herman
Fishman. assistant treasurer.
Harry Yudkoff will report
for the nominating committee.
Morris Plafkin, who has
taught in the United Hebrew

Schools for 36 years, will ne.
cept the citations in behalf of
the teachers. A reception in
the teachers' honor will follow
the meeting.
The guest speaker will be
Prof. Abraham I. Katsh of New
York University.

Eastern Philanthropists
to Dedicate Yeshiva Dorms

Two New Bedford, Mass.,
philanthropists will join in
dedicating rooms for the new
College Residence Hall of Yesh-
iva University, New York, on
Monday. Samuel Kaplan and
Hyman Krivoff have each estab-
lished a dormitory room to help
house some of the many new
students enrolled at the univer-
sity.

Arab Students Fight Bonn
Ban on Anti-Israelism

DUSSELDORF, (JTA) — A
complaint against police action
banning an anti-Israel demon-
stration by Arab students has
been made by the chairman of
the Arab Students League to
t h e North - Rhine - Westphalia
Ministry of the Interior.
According to Interior Minis-
ter Dr. Dufhues, the Arab
Students League was sending
300 students to Bonn bearing
posters with anti-Israel slogans.
The Bonn police authori 2S
called the demonstrations to a
halt only three hours before
it was to begin and confiscated
the league's posters.
