Rabbi Gershon Winer receiv-
ed an undisclosed sum of cash
in an out-of-court settlement of
Denver's famous "kosher
cookie" case against the Bow-
man Biscuit Co.
Rabbi Winer had sued the
company for representing their
products as being made with
vegetable shortening only. On
the basis of this assurance, Rab-
bi Winer had permitted the
sale of the company's cookies
by the Women's League of Beth
Hamedrosh Hagodol, whose pul-
pit he occupied at the time.
The cookies were distributed to
hundreds of homes.
Later investigation showed
that the company used animal
shortening in its bakery and
consequently; the cookies were
not kosher. Rabbi Winer charg-
ed in his suit that the false
claims by the company had cost
him his reputation and pulpit.
Following two years of litiga-
tion, the company agreed to an
out-of-court settlement that in-
volved a payment to the rabbi,
plus insertion of advertisements
in specified newspapers in which
the Bowman Co. would acknowl-
edge its responsibility in the
matter.
Rabbi Winer is currently
spiritual head of Baldwin Jew-
ish Center in Long Island.
