Seymour Lippmann, a tire
research scientist for the
United States Rubber Co., is
credited this week with invent-
ing a new method to eliminate
much of the noise caused by
auto tires.
Working with Arthur Grant
in the company's development
department here, Lippman
learned that certain patterns
on the tread minimize noise.
By following certain pro-
cedures that are now being
patented, the two researchers
were able to eliminate noise
and scramble the rest by. hav-
ing it mix with normal traffic
sounds.
U.S. Rubber is currently
applying the inventors' formula
to all passenger tires, giving
"corner squeal" particular at-
tention by shaping the tire
edge.
Lippmann, who lives at 16859
Griggs, is married to a Detroit
girl, the former Annette Ag-
