Center Art Staff Sets Instruction
Painting, enameling, sculp-
ture, ceramics and woodwork-
ing will be among the classes
offered as the Jewish Commu-
nity Center inaugurates its art
program this month at the new
main building, 18100 Meyers at
Curtis.
Classes will begin in the next
six weeks for adults, ladies and
juniors under the supervision of
art director David W. Ecker,
well-known artist, sculptor and
art educator.
Ecker has assembled a staff
of diversified backgrounds, in-
cluding Saul Jack Horowitz,
Marvin Beerbohm, Wilma Bak-
er, Jay Holland and Ralph Levy.
Painting for adults, taught by
Beerbohm, will be the first art
class at the new building. Ten
sessions will run from 1 to 3

Open painting time without the
instructor will follow from 3
to 5 p.m. for people with some
experience. Open to non-mem-
bers.
Enameling for ladies will be-
gin on April 2 and painting on
April 7, as part of the "Ladies
day out" program. Baby sitting
arrangements will be available
during these sessions.
There will be 10 sessions of
each class. Beerbohm will in-
struct in painting from 1 to 3
p.m., on Tuesdays, through June
23; enameling will run through
June 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. on
Thursdays. Open to non-mem-
bers.
Advanced painting for adults,
taught by Horowitz, will run
from .8 to 10 p.m., Wednesdays,
in 10 sessions, April 8 through
June 24. The • class- is by invita
tion only, after interviews. Open
to non-members.
Miss Baker will teach ceram-
ics for adults on Mondays from
7 to 9 p.m. in eight sessions,
April 13 to June 1. Open to non-
members.
Holland will teach sculpture
for adults, from 7 to 9 p.m.,
Tuesdays, in ten sessions, April
14 to June 23. Open to non-
members.
Art for children, ages six to
eight, is offered by Horowitz,
from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Mondays,
in 10 sessions, April 20 to June
22. Members only.
Horowitz will also conduct a
children's art class, for ages 9
to 12, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., Tues-
days, in 10 sessions, April 21 to
June 23. Members only.
A father and son woodwork-
ing class, for boys 9 to 12 and
their fathers, will be taught by
Levy from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.,
Mondays, in three sessions, May
4, 11 and 18. Enrollment is
limited to six father-son pairs.

The engagement of Lois Pos-
kel to Jonathan F. Haber is an-
nounced by her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Sol Poskel, of Tracey -Ave.
Her fiance is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Horace J. Haber, of War-
rington Dr.
The couple is in their senior
year at the University of Michi-
gan, where Mr. Haber is affili-
ated with Delta Sigma Pi fra-
ternity. An August wedding is
planned.

AUXILIARY will hold a paid-
up membership party at 6:30
p.m., Tuesday, at the Memorial
Home. Mrs. Milton Rose, presi-
dent, said that a "tasting bee,"
with each woman preparing her
favorite recipe, will be • fea
tured. After dinner, the entries
will be judged by a cooking
expert from the Detroit Edison
Co., and prizes will be awarded
the winners. Copies of all re-
cipes will be made available to

DETROIT LADIES AUXIL-
IARY held a Purim party re-
cently for youngsters at the
Home for Retarded Children in
Lapeer, under the supervision
of the Auxiliary's child welfare
committee. Nellie Berger is
chairman, and was assisted by
Hannah Seinwell and Lillian
Tulupman. Games, prizes, gifts
and Purim refreshments were
featured for the 60 children
who attended.

Lemanis will teach ballet for
adults and children at the Jew-
ish Community Center's new
main building, beginning April
6.
Mirdza Lemanis, ballerina of
the Latvian National Grand
Opera, has danced leading parts
in classical ballets in Germany,
Australia, Sweden and Poland.
Lemanis was trained in ballet
by Sergejeff and Fedorova at
the famous Petersburg ballet
school in Russia. He later stud-
ied with Michael Fokine and
Nijinsky.
