Synagogues, Religious Schools Plan Rabbi Hertz' Book
Contest Award
Special Festivities Honoring Purim Wins
"Prescription for Heartache,"

Synagogues and schools - in
Detroit will mark Purim, which
begins this year on Monday
night, with parti6, festvities
and the traditional reading of
the Megillah, which recounts
the story of Esther and the
triumph of the Jewish people
over the evil of Haman.
Cong. Bnai David
Religious school will conduct
its Purim carnival at 10 a.m.,
Sunday.
Megillah services at 6:45
p.m., Monday. The Sisterhood
will supply gragers and refresh-
ments to all young persons at-
tending. Morning services and
Megillah reading at 7 a.m.,
Tuesday.
Beth Aaron Synagogue
Megillah services at 6:30 p.m.,
Monday. At 8 p.m., that night,
the congregation, Sisterhood,
Men's Club and United Syna-
gogue Youth will join in a
family Purim celebration.
Cantor Ihil Gildin will sing,
with Rabbi Benjamin H. Gor-
relick presenting a short ad-
dress. Shimon and Elaine
Gewirtz will entertain with
Purim and Israeli songs. Mrs.
A. Kaplan and D. Goldsmith,
J. Silberman and T. Tannis are
on the committee planning the
event.
Temple Beth El
Confirmation d e p a r t m e nt
dramatic group will present
"South Shushan," on Saturday
morning. On Sunday, the prim-
ary department will have its
Purim masquerade party. The
play "Lightning Verdict" will
be preSented for the primary
and intermediate departments
at 10 a.m. and 10:55 a.m., res-
pectively.
Following the play, the
primary department will have
a Shushan parade in the Frank-
lin Memorial Hall and the in-
termediates will have their
parties in their respective class-
rooms. Sheldon Slavin is dram-
atic coach, with music under
the direction of Mr. and Mrs
Jason Tickton.
United Jewish Folk School
Students and parents will
gather for the Purim carnival
at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the
Schaver auditorium of the
Hayim Greenberg Center, 19161
Schaefer. Booths will be set up
carrying out the theme of Pur-
dim. Costumes, prizes and sing-
ing will be feature. Families of
all students are invited. Nur-
sery school students must be
accompanied by parents.

Megillah services at 6:30 p.m.,
Monday, followed by children's

services at 7 p.m. Rabbi Mor-
decai Halpern and Cantor Reu-
ben Erlbaum will officiate.
Cong. Gemiluth Chassodim
Megillah services at 7:30 p.m.,
Monday and 7:30 a.m., Tuesday.
Religious school Purim party
will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, at
the Jewish Community Center
Simons branch, 4000 Tuxedo.
Paul Mosbach is arranging the
event. Rabbi Litke will address
the children and their parents
and the Women's Group will
serve refreshments.

Monday.
Young Married League will
hold a Purim dinner-dance at
8:30 p.m., Saturday, in the so-
cial hall. Young P e o p 1 e' s
League will hold its Purim ball
at 8:30 p.m., Sunday, in the
social hall.

ning in the main sanctuary.

a.m., Tuesday. Gragers, shalach
monos and refreshments will be
distributed to children at Mon-
day evening's services.
Young Israel Branches
Both Young Israel of Detroit
and Northwest will jointly spon-
sor a Purim carnival at 2:30
p.m., March 29, at the former's
building,- 12521 Dexter. Games,
prizes and entertainment are
being planned by Risha Cohen,
Rev. Mar shall Goldman and
Yudi Gellman.

rabbi of Temple Beth El, De-
troit, was named winner of a
$100 honorable mention prize in
the 1958 Pageant Press Best
Book Contest.
"Prescription for Heartache"
is a candid, well-documented in-
spirational work designed to aid
the troubled spirit. Such timely
topics as "Battling Worry,"
"Overcoming Fears," "Mature
Marriage," Understanding Teen-
agers," and others are discussed.
Simultaneous with the an-
nouncement Pageant Press an-
nounced a new Best Book Con-
test for 1959, with $1,600 in
cash awards. First prize will be
$500; second prize, $250; third
prize, $150. There will also be
seven honorable mention
awards of $100 each.

Beth Aaron Services

Beth Aaron Synagogue will
mark its annual Sisterhood Sab-
bath at services planned for
8:30 p.m., today, in the main

din will conduct the service.
