Dr. S. E. Gould
Visits Venezuela Drive to Mark National ORT Day
to Aid Research

Dr. S. E. Gould, director of
laboratories at Wayne County
General Hospital and professor
of clinical pathology at Wayne
State University, is currently
investigating the possibilities
that a common bug in Vene-
zuela is the cause of a high per-
centage of deaths in that
country.
1
Invited to Venezuela by Dr
Jose I. Baldo, dirr ct o
chronic disease contro 1, Dr.
Gould recently spent several
weeks in that country lecturing
and learning about the bug.
The Detroit doctor learned
that the bug, called a triatom,
is similar to what is called in
Michigan an assassin bug, only
the latter does not attack
people, while the former does
and also deposits a one-celled
parasite.
Dr. Gould believes it is these
parasites which get into the
bloodstream and multiply in the
, muscle tissue, including the
muscle of the heart. This. in
turn, expands all four chambers
of the heart.
The disease, called chronic
myocarditis, is responsible, Dr.
Gould relates, for causing 43
I 1 percent of the adult deaths in
the city of Valencia, Venezuela's
fourth largest city. It is more
common among the poor ele-
ments of the population.
