In 1956 Leon Uris, author of
the widely acclaimed "Battle
Cry," traveled through Den-
mark, Italy, Cyprus and Iran
and covered 12,000 miles within
the Israeli borders to research
the story of "Exodus." He lived
in Israel's cities, tramped her
hills and deserts, visiting and
interviewing thousands of her
disparate citizenry. When the
Sinai campaign started, he be-
came a war correspondent and
went to the Suez Canal to cover
the action. The results of his
travels and studies is "Exodus"
—a drama that unfolds in the
ghettoes of Russia and Poland,
on the high seas and the airlift
lanes, from the forbidding pla-

teaus of Yemen to the ice-bound
mountains of Alaska, and from
modern Tel Aviv to the shores
of the Chesapeake Bay. It is the
picture of a people's dream to
establish a homeland, to live in
freedom, to build cities, turn
desert into gardens, laugh and
sing, worship in the ways of
Abraham, love and be loved far
from the shadow of oppression.
It is the story of men in mortal
struggle and of men and women
in love.
"Exodus" currently is being
filmed by United Artists on lo-

is producing the movie.

Women Mobilize
Many Events
for Brotherhood

Women of Metropolitan De-
troit mobilized Tuesday after-
noon between the hours of 1
and 3 to meet the challenge of
Brotherhood Week, sparked by
the Women's Division of the
Detroit Round Table of the
National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews. One hundred
Brotherhood teas were in prog-
ress simultaneously in Metro-
politan Detroit and the sub-
urban areas.
These teas differed only in
numbers attending and elabor-
ateness of setting, for they
were all dedicated to the same
purpose — that of promoting
a climate of understanding, ac-
ceptance and goodwill among
women of different religious
beliefs. nationality, racial and
cultural backgrounds.
Kits,of human relations ma-
terials were provided each hos-
tess by the Detroit Round
Table. These were examined
and discussed during the after-
noon. WJR beamed its specially
prepared program to the teas.
Charles Park interviewed Mrs.
Reaha Eckles, who among many
civic positions is the president
of Casenovia Junior College
and chairman of the national
commission on community or-
ganizations of the National
Conference of Christians and
Jews. Mrs. Eckles outlined the
importance of the role of wo-
men in promoting understand-
ing in the world. - Peace." she
said. "begins in our neighbors."
The Women's Division of the
Detroit Round Table of some
200 members has a year round
program. Any woman in the
metropolitan area may belong.
Mrs. Earl Willoughbly is the
general chairman and Mrs. C.
J. Eberhardt, Mrs. J. J. Mc-
Clendon. Mrs. Irving Small are
the co-chairmen.
Mayor Louis C. Miriani is-
sued the following statement
for Brotherhood Week:
"During this, the 1959 observ-
ance of Brotherhood Week. it
is altogether fitting that our
people should give thought to
the necessity of living together
as brothers. under the common
Fatherhood of God. At a time
when the American way of life
is gravely threatened we must
not allow differences in creed,
race or national origin to div-
ide us as a people. but we must
stand together for those prin-
ciples all Americans cherish.
I commend to all our citizens
the observance of Brotherhood
Week as a time to reassert
these principles and renew our
allegiance to them."
