Histadrut, Mapai Leaders Demand Official Gag on Dayan Criticism

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Pinhas
Lavon, Secretary General of the
Histadrut, served an ultimatum
on Prime Minister David Ben-
Gurion to order former Army
Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan to
stop making political speeches
which have enraged labor offi-
cials and left-wing parties in
the coalition government.
The demand was made at a
six-hour- meeting of top Mapai
leaders in Ben-Gurion's office.
Lavon reportedly told the meet-

ing that if Gen. Dayan con-
tinued to advocate publicly a
wage freeze and "efficiency
dismissals" in the government
and in Hisadrut, it would be
necessary to postpone the sched-
uled Histadrut elections.
Mapam and Achdut, Mapai's
two left wing partners in the
coalition, oppose both propos-
als. While most Mapai leaders
agree in principle with Gen.
Dayan's ideas, they were un-
derstood to consider it unwise

`Rivers -in Desert'

Farrar, Straus & Cudahy and
the Jewish Publication Society
of America again have under-
taken a joint venture, by pub-
lishing "Rivers in the Desert:
A History of the Negev," by
Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of
Hebrew Union College - Jewish
Institute of Religion.
This book, in popular fashion,
shows the tremendous impor-
tance of the Negev as a passage
way between confinc.7.t.;. the
Patriarchs, commencing with
Abraham, knew it well, and the
Israelites of the Exodus exper-
ienced bitter defeat in their at-
tempt to enter the Promised
Land directly through it from
Sinai.
In the Negev the author's
archaeological survey expedi-
tions have located about 400 an-
cient sites. Evidence is present-
ed that shows there have been
no major, permanent climatic
changes in the Negev during
the last 10,000 years; that not
weather, but wars and protract-
ed economic catastrophes have
been responsible for the destruc-
tion and disappearance of - a
whole series of civilizations in
the Negev. In addition to earlier
settlements, the author found,
in the three main parts of the
Negev, Judean kingdom villages
and fortresses dating from the
time of King Solomon in the
tenth century B.C. down to the
beginning of the sixth century
B.C. when Judah was destroyed
by the- Babylonians.
A full review of "Rivers in
the Desert" will appear in a
later issue of The Jewish News.

to say so publicly.
The anger of Mapai veterans
reached a climax when Gen.
Dayan publicly criticized "those
who for 20 years had been sit-
ting on the fifth floor," a refer-
ence to the site of the execu-
tive's offices at Histadrut head-
quarters.
It was reported that Gen.
Dayan promised that he would
avoid making such deprecatory
remarks. He insisted, however,
that he would continue to dis-
cuss publicly all controversial
issues even if that proved to
be unpleasant for Mapai.

Mapai branches all over the
country have protested against
Dayan's attitude. In at least one
instance, at the Mapai branch
of Ramat Gan, a bitter dispute
broke out among the younger
members and the veterans,
necessitating intervention by
the Mapai Party's own control
department.
Histadrut's daily newspaper,
Davar, printed cartoon show-
ing Dayan as a small boy throw-
ing stones against the windows
of the Histadrut. The cartoon
labelled him "naughty boy."

Phony Bomb Found
in Florida Synagogue
After Threatening Call

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.,
(JTA)—Police continued their
search for the perpetrators of
the latest bomb threat this week
against a southern synagogue
in which a shoebox crammed
with railroad flares was found
after a telephone call. One of
the flares was marked with a
Ku Klux Klan emblem.
The anonymous call was made
to a newspaper reporter, Har-
old Flagg. The caller said: "Lis-
ten carefully. I have just placed
four sticks of TNT alongside
the synagogue on Flagler Street.
It is set to go off in exactly 11
minutes. This is not a hoax."
Before the 11 minutes were
up, police arrived at the syna-
gogue and found the box, con-
nected by a wire to a battery.
Detective E. J. McCann said
that "there was care taken in
the assembly of the thing." The
shoebox and its contents were
to be shipped to the FBI labor-
atory in Washington for analy-
sis, Detective McCann said. He
added that it would not be
known definitely whether the
flares would have ignited until
the tests in Washington were
completed.

As long as he sought the
Lord, God made him to prosper.
