At 90, Max Edwards Makes Books His Major Interest
In the middle 1920s and ear-
ly 1930s, Max Edwards was pop-
ular in Detroit Jewish circles
as a book reviewer.
Active for many years in
Bnai Brith and the Masonic
Order, lie was among the pop-
ular community leaders.
Today, on the eve of his
90th birthday, Edwards still is
an avid reader, takes an inter-
est in cultural affairs, is deep-
ly devoted to congregational
affairs and remains a strong

recalls saying he wanted to get
dressed because it was day-
light — mistaking the fire for
sunlight. His parents then
moved to Goldsboro, N.C.,
where he spent his childhood.
'Mr. Edwards visited with
President William McKinley
three weeks before he was as-
sassinated. He met many not-
ables and among his prized
possessions are autographs from
many of them.

He was married in 1899 to
the former Emogene Vinton.
They have lived in Detroit
since 1904. They have a son,
E. J. Edwards; a daughter, Mir-
iam E. Kushner; four grand-
children and a great-grandson.
This nonagenarian was vice-
president of Pisgah Lodge of
Bnai Brith and for 36 years
was chaplain of Perfection
Lodge No. 486, F. & A. M.,
having been installed again on
Dec. 10 last for the lodge's
chaplaincy for 1959.
He has been a member of
Temple Beth El for 53 years
and for many years was active
as a public speaker throughout
Michigan for many charitable
organizatims._

He has a number of rare and
irreplaceable volumes.
For more than 40 years, he
was an agent for the New
York Life Insurance Co.
He recalls that his parents
