Marks Double Dedication

By the Oak-Wooder
Hanukah, literally the sea-
son of "dedication," takes on
special meaning this weekend
for members of Cong. Mishkan
Israel who have chosen the first
day of the festival for dedicat-
ing their new synagogue in Oak
Park. •
The congregation, which was
a landmark on Linwood and
Blaine for over 30 years, was
sold two years ago when most
of its members had moved to
outlying areas of residence.
Now situated on a full block
of frontage between Parklawn
and Cloverlawn, on 9 Mile Rd.,
the synagogue is capable of ac-
commodating 600 people up-
stairs in the main sanctuary and
an additional 300 in the down-
stairs social hall.
Ceremonies of dedication
for the structure will take
place at 3 p.m., Sunday, when
representatives of the Oak
Park city government, the De-
troit rabbinate, M i z r a c h
Hapoel Hamizrachi and other
community groups jco4n in the
rituals.
The synagogue is fortunate
to have as its spiritual leaders
one of the leading figures in the
American orthodox movement,
Rabbi Isaac Stollman, who was
only last month re-elected na-
tional president of the United
Religious Zionists of America.
Joining with Rabbi Stollman
in conducting the rituals will
be his son, Rabbi Samuel S.
Stollman, of Cong. Shaar Hash-
omayim, Windsor; Cantor Saul
Schenker, also of Shaar Hash-
omayim; and his son-in-law,
Rabbi Joseph Singer, of Malden,
Mass.
Representing the lay leaders
of the synagogue will be Jacob
Bacow, chairman of the build-

Shainak, president of the con-
gregation.
Although still not completely
finished and furnished inside,
the new Mishkan Israel is al-
ready making plans = to extend
its facilities to include a library,
a place for daily minyan serv-
ices and a school.
Much emphasis has been
placed on the latter, since
in Rabbi Stollman's words,
"Today, a synagogue without
a school and room for youth
activities has no future."
Sunday's ceremonies will be
conducted under a canopy out-
side, if the weather permits;
otherwise there will be a pro-
cession of the Sifrei Torah from
the social hall to the sanctuary.
Maariv services and a Hanukah
lighting ceremony will conclude
the program.
Organized on Hastings Street
about 1912, Mishkan Israel oc-
cupied only one other tempora-
ry home—at Taylor and 12th
St.—besides the building at
Linwood and Blaine.
Its tradition through the
years as a contributor to all
causes and a staunch supporter
of the Zionist ideal makes the
synagogue a welcome addition
to Oak Park's growing number
of congregations.
Its Hanukas Habayis—"Dedi-
cation of the House" — Sunday
is open to the community, which
is invited to join in the fes-
tivities.
