The pullout of British forces
from Jordan and American
troops from Lebanon was fol-
lowed by the start of a United
Arab Republic anti-Israel prop-
aganda drive which pushed Jor-
dan back once more into the
international spotlight.
UAR President Nasser pre-
sumably emboldened by assur-
ances from the Soviet Union
set his propaganda mills work-
ing with a charge that Israel
was mobilizing troops near the
Jordan border. Israeli spokes-
man immediately denied the
charge and suggested that Nas-
ser was throwing up a smoke-
screen to cover his own plans
in regard to King Hussein's em-
battled regime:
Israel was being wary in re-
gard to public discussion about
Jordan's future a point made
strongly by Prime Minister Da-
vid Ben-Gurion in a Knesset de-
bate on a Herut demand for a
full debate on that issue. The
Prime Minister said that Nasser
"knows" — and that is all he
needs to know — that we are
opposed to the entry of foreign
troops in Jordan." He said it
was better that Jordan should
continue to exist and he ap-
pealed for restraint in discuss-
ing policy on Jordan.
He warned it would be very
harmful to discuss publicly
what Israel would do in the
event of violation of the Jordan-
ian status quo. He declared
"there is no need to tell a hos-
tile world what we are going
to do in a hypothetical case es-
pecially on a question involv-
ing peace or its opposite."
The Knesset debate also was
enlivened by a Befi-Gurion de-
nunciation of Nasser in terms
of unusual vigor. The Prime
Minister said that the only rea-
son Nasser should not be com-
pared with Hitler was that Is-
rael would not let Nasser do
what Hitler had done. Ben Gur-
ion said Nasser was capable of
such crimes.
The Israel Foreign Minis-
try disclosed Tuesday that it
had instructed Israel diplo-
mats abroad to call to the at-
tention of the Government
concerned the renewed Sov-
iet-United Arab Republic
propaganda drive against Is-
rael on the future of Jordan.
The diplomats were expect-
ed to cite the statements of
Israel's position made in the
Knesset by Prime Minister
Ben-Gurion, as well as offi-
cial denial by Jordan that
there were any Israel troop
concentrations of the Jordan-
ian border.
beamed to the Near East that
Israel is preparing aggression
against Jordan and massing
troops. The broadcast alleged
that Israel plans to seize Jor-
dan within a few days.
Radio Moscow, in the Arab
language last monitored here,
said Israel's alleged plan
"threatens not only the exis-
tence of Jordan as an Arab
state, but the peace of the
whole of the Middle East." Sev-
eral Soviet newspapers, includ-
ing Pravda, the Communist
Party paper in the USSR, have
made similar charges.
The Cairo press has been
filled for several days with re-
ports that Israel was concen-
trating troops on the Jordan
frontier. The Nasser-controlled
Middle East News Agency said
France is sending six bombers
to Israel. The newspaper Al
Ahram charged Israel with hav-
ing joined in a British-support-
ed plot involving military op-
erations aimed at placing the
west bank of the Jordan River
under United Nations Control.

WASHINGTON -- State De-
partment spokesman Lincoln
White said Tuesday that "the
United States Government has
"no information whatsoeVer"
that would confirm Soviet • and
-United Arab Republic charges
that Israel is mobilizing military
forces near the Jordan frontier.
White said the State Depart-
ment's information showed that
reports alleging such action by
Israel were false. He noted Is-
rael's formal denial last Thurs-
day of allegations emanating
from Communist and UAR
sources. White was asked to
comment on reports that the
State Department had issued a
precautionary warning to Is-
rael and the UAR to refrain
from action involving Jordan.
He replied that "it is stand-
ard procedure for us. On every
occasion we have to ask people
not to do things that could
cause tensions."
President Will Not Convene
Capitol Parley on Bigotry

WASHINGTON — President Eisenhower indicated
Wednesday rejection of requests by religious organiza-
tions for him to summon a national White House con-
ference to rally public opinion against religious and
racial bigotry and bombings.
Eisenhower said he has opposed such bigotry during
the six years he has held the Presidency and did not
believe public opinion had to be rallied through a special
conference under his auspices.
He said he was uncertain that the proposed national
White House conference was the proper way to organize
national sentiment against bigotry. -
Religious groups had urged the White House to
convene a conference that would bring together leaders
of religion, education, social welfare, business and
labor. It was envisaged that such a • conference could
discuss recent bombings and other manifestations of
religious and racial hatred.
There was hope that the drive for new legislation,
especially a Federal anti-bombing bill, might emerge
from, an assembly of that type and attention focused on
ger to the whole nation from violent bigotry.
