at a recent English assembly.
Sheldon is currently president
of the Detroit Youth Advisory
Council, president of the Broad-
casters on Tape Incorporated,
a member of the Mayor's Youth
Committee on Children and
Youth, and an honorary citizen
of Boys' Town.
The • remainder of the as-
sembly program was centered
around the "special" classes
offered by the English depart-
ment. Demonstrations of the
benefits gained by public
speaking, radio speech, dra-
matics or journalism were giv-
en by the students. Sandra An-
drews, Judy Edelstein, Walter
Caplin, Erica Gelberman, Mike
Kushner, Ronald Nabit and Ar-
lene Frank were among the
participants.

Dr. MAX LERNER, news-
paperman,. author and teach-
er, will be the principal
speaker at the annual dinner-
dance of the Detroit Chap-
ter of Brandeis University
Associates. The black tie af-
fair will be held Nov. 8,• at
the Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel,
with music by the Fenby-
Carr Orchestra. According to
Chester L. Colen, president,
tickets are available from
any member of the Associ-
ates.
SS Jerusalem Maiden
Cruise of Caribbean

sailing from New York Nov.

The fully air conditioned

old, will call at some of the
most fascinating ports in the
Caribbean area on her initial
13 day holiday jaunt — St.
Thomas, Virgin Islands; Fort-
de-France, Martinique; Port of
Spain, Trinidad; Curacao, Neth-
erlands West Indies; and Port-
au-Prince, Haiti. The cruise in-
cludes Thanksgiving Day at
sea; actually there are only
seven business days away from
home.
Zim's Jerusalem is the new-
est addition to Israel's mer-
chant marine.

All of Central is looking for-
ward to the speedy recovery
of Ernest "Turk" Turken, who
was recently removed from the
critical list of Detroit Memo-
rial Hospital. He is now being
treated for injuries received
in a serious fall. His chap-
ter, AZA 63, joins Central in
good wishes for a quick and
healthy return.

given by Central's student body
on Wednesday. The English
classes conducted all collec-
tions. Blind auctions were pop-
ular in many rooms, as the
teachers graciously postponed
tests in order to support this
worthy campaign.

An exhibition of paintings by
artist GEORGE *NEUHAUS will
begin Wednesday, at the. Anna
L. Werbe Galleries, 19458 Liver-
nois. Neuhaus currently is ex-
hibiting in the Jewish Museum

Famous Melachrino Strings
at Masonic on Nov. 7
George Melachrino, talented
creator of the famous "Mela-
chrino Strings" and "Mood
Music," will appear at Masonic
Temple with his orchestra at
8:20 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7. Born
in London in 1909, of Greek
parentage, he started his musi-
cal career on the violin, while
a small boy. In 1939, he formed
his own orchestra and secured
an engagement at the famed
Cafe de Paris from which he
broadcast over the BBC. Mela-
chrino's talent was soon dis-
covered and he was appointed
musical director of the British
Band of the Allied Expedition-
ary Forces, and soon attained
world fame.
