U.S. Court Decides
Sinai Campaign
Constituted War
The United States District
Court in Maryland has decided
in a recent case that a state
of war existed between Egypt,
and Britain, France and Israel,
during the 1956 Sinai action.
The verdict was given in a
contest arising from the ter-
mination of a contract that a
U.S. ship had with an Egyp-
tian firm. The contract was
cancellable if the firm's home
country were at war with any
NATO country.
The court ruled that the
Egyptian president had pro-
claimed a state of war in a
speech made on Nov. 1, 1956,
which fulfilled all the require-
ments under international law.

Viennese Jews Protest
Appointment of Nazi
VIENNA — Leaders of the
Vienna Jewish community made
formel protests Tuesday against
plans to appoint Herman Neu-
bacher, the first Nazi mayor of
Vienna, as general director of
the Austrian National airlines.
In the protest to members
of the government and leaders
of the parties in the coalition,
it was pointed out that Neu-
bacher was responsible for the
destruction of 17 synagogues
during a Nazi inspired pogrom.
The Jewish leaders said that
Neubacher, as the Nazi appoint-
ed mayor, banned intervention
by the city's fire brigades to
save the burning synagogues.
