CHICAGO, (JTA)—A state-
ment by the Church Federa-
tion of Greater Chicago in-
sisting that public schools
were obligated "to recognize
and forthright
in positive
policy and practice the convic-
tion that true moral, ethical
and spiritual values are re-
ligious values" evoked strong
protests from rabbinical
leaders here.
The Protestant organization;
in making the bid for teaching
of religion in public schools,
said the position was "provi-
sional" until it was reviewed
by the 27 member groups.
Rabbi Henry Fosher, presi-
dent of the Chicago Rabbinical
Association, commented that
the general position of the
rabbinical group was one of
opposition "to the introduc-
tion of religion in the public
schools on any basis or in any
form."
Support for the Jewish po-
sition was offered by the Rev
Edwin T. Buehrer, president
of the Western Unitarian Con-
ference, who warned that "as
soon as we teach anything "in
a school program" which satis
fies most Christians, it wil
offend our Jewish friends."
Dr. George L. Ford, execu
tive director of the Nation a
Association of Evangelicals, re
presenting the conservativ
Protestant groups, said he fa
vored Bible reading in th
public schools "without corn
men t."

SS—THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Frid ay, S eptember 12, 1958

Be not afraid of sudden fear
He hath made every thing
beautiful in his time. — Eccl. . . . for the Lord shall be thy
confidence.—Prov. 3:25,26.
tion of the Jews of Frankfurt, 3:11.
Germany. As he views them,
the Frankfurt Jews, who were
such a proud and cultured com-
munity in the last century, up
to its destruction by the Nazis,
do not emerge as such a hand-
some lot.
Karamzin speaks of them as
"more intimately bound to-
gether than we triumphant
Christians," as possessing a
"more communal spirit." With
the traveler was a Dr. N. who
advised him not to buy any-
24220 Mound, Center Line
thing from Jews because "they
cheat," and it aroused the
protest: "We are as honorable
as Christians, the Israelite said
J Effer so n 6-6230
with some heat."
The Russian traveler reports
that the Jews of Frankfurt ex-
pressed pride in "the great
DI
man" Mendelssohn because he
"was a Jew, a Jew!" Then he
relates a protest by the Frank-
furt Jews against the staging
of "The Merchant of Venice,"
The Jews threatened not to
attend the theater. "The direc-
tor," Karamzin wrote, "not want-
ing to lose a part of his audi-
ence, replied that it would be
dropped from the repertoire of
the Frankfurt theater."
In view of what we know o
about Frankfurt Jewry, this is a
Contractor
fantastic story. In view of the
persecution of Jews in the late
All Kinds of Cement Work
18th century, it is difficult to
believe that Jews exerted

pressure upon a theater.

But—that's what Karamzin's
18th century travel story re-
lates. The age of the ghetto was
transformed in the course of
Holiday Greetings
the following century, only to

result in the total destruction
of Frankfurt Jewry by the
Nazis.
