light. The Lord is said to have
blessed the Sabbath and this
Biblical -statement was inter-
preted to mean that he blessed
it with much light. Some of the
sources in rabbinic literature
(Shaloh) mention a custom of
lighting as many as ten candles
for the Sabbath. Isaac Luria,
the famed Kabbalist is quoted
as calling for seven candles to
be lit for the Sabbath. The lat-
ter figure is supposed to sym-
bolize the seven days of the
week which come to their full
reality by the coming of the
Sabbath.
Seven candles also symbolize
the 7,000th year which is sup-
posed to witness the coming of
the Messiah and a world lit
around the clock. Later customs
developed the tradition of light-
ing a candle for every person in
the home. Some insist on light-
ing seven candles to symbolize
the menorah in the temple
claiming that a Jewish home on
the Sabbath is like the Temple.

Everyday Problems
Mrs. Sidonie Matsner Gruen-
berg, special consultant of the
Child Study Association of
America, one of America's out-
standing authorities on child
care and the problems facing
our growing youth, offers sound
advice to parents and helps
them in dealing with children
5 to 12, in her new book.
"Everyday Problems of Boys
and Girls," published this week
by Random House.
This is one of her outstanding
works, and it is an especially
useful volume in our time, when
the question of child guidance
is so valuable in dealing with
the problems of our age.
Mrs. Gruenberg who always
has the cooperation of her hus-
band, Benjamin C. Gruenberg,
another famous child psycholo-
gist, in the preparation of her
books, devotes her book to mat-
ters relating to children at home
and at play, in school and among
their friends.
Issues relating to books,

book will, for example, be im-
pressed by the coolness with
which parents are advised to
handle children when they
bring home naughty words and
bad jokes. Taking the issue in
stride, Mrs. Gruenberg affirms
that "we can teach them (our

"Everyday Problems of Boys

"must" reading for every young
parent: many problems will then
be averted.

`Causeless Hatred'—Cause
of Destruction of Temple
Why was the First Temple
destroyed? Because of three
flagrant violations: idolatory,
adultery. murder. As for the
Second Temple — when the
people were occupied with
Torah, Mitzvoth, and acts of
benevolence—why was it de-
stroyed? Because of causeless
hatred (Sin'ath chinom). Which
teaches us that causeless hatred
is equivalent to the three cardi-
