DUARTE, Calif.—A grant of
$17,500 has been awarded by
the U.S. Atomic Energy Com-
mission for research on the
white cells of the blood, and
their role in both normal and
disease states at the City of
Hope, a national medical center
under Jewish auspices.
The grant will support for
one year a continuing study of
white cell production factors in
blood by Dr. Howard R. Bier-
man, scientific director of City
of Hope, and his associates. At
recent scientific Meetings, Dr.
Bierman suggested white cell
production in both normal and
leukemic persons may be con-
trolled by a circulating sub-
stance in the plasma.
Studying effects of human
plasma on laboratory animals,
City of Hope researchers found
a uniform response by bone
marrow, a major site of white
cell production, indicating con-
trol by some circulating sub-
stance. Work is now going for-
ward to attempt to isolate and
identify this active plasma com-
ponent.
Results of the study may
have application in certain types
of cancer and blood disorders,
as well as protection against ef-
fects of radiation exposure.

ST. LOUIS (JTA)—A broad
