Menasha Skulnik, foremost
actor of the Yiddish • stage and
one of the great comedians of
t h e modern
era, comes to
Northland
Playhouse,
Tuesday, Aug.
12, through
Sunday, Aug.
17, to star in
person in the
Skulnik
smash Broad-
way hit, "Uncle Willie."
The comedy, written by Julie
Bern and Irving Elman, con-
cerns events happening in the
then-sparsely settled Jewish
neighborhood of the Bronx
after the turn of the century,
where, as Uncle Willie explains,
"in summer you roast like a
chicken. In Winter—Siberia!"
The authors are not embar-
rassed that theirs is a senti-
mental comedy with a heart on
its sleeve, but it is never sticky
and it evokes endless laughter
ranging from chuckles to hearty
guffaws. Skulnik plays the
same lead role in the play that
won him such overwhelming
critical acclaim in the original
Broadway production, which
ran for 140 performances.
Uncle Willie is an open-
hearted, sentimental, shrewd
and resourceful Jewish peddler.
An incurable busy-body, he gets
all the things everybody needs
(frequently, as he explains, be-
fore they know they need
them), supplying wives and hus-
bands, wedding dresses, burial
plots, and even salubriQus cir-
cumstances. Ultimately, of
course, he contrives to bring
down the curtain on happiness
for everyone.
Tickets for "Uncle Willie"
are now on sale at the North-
land Playhouse Drive-In Box-
office, downtown at Grinnell's,
and at Macauley's Eastland and
Northland. Mail and phone
orders go to Northland Play-
house, Northland Center, De-
troit 35, ELgin 7-0220.
Skulnik is supported by a pro-
fessional cast of players made
up of veterans of the Yiddish
theater and the original Broad-
way company.
If you are receiving social
security monthly checks and are

ing substantial services in self-

Ground Broken for
New Boesky's Site
A new highlight in the his-
tory of Boesky's, Detroit's 40-
year-old famous restaurant, was
the ground-breaking on Wed-
nesday of a new building on
the corner of James Couzens
and Greenfield.
The new building is being
designed by the well known
architect, Theodore Rogovoy. Its
completion is expected in the
late fall.
Harry Boesky said that the
new Boesky home will be the
most modern and plush eating
establishment in Detroit.
When completed, the new
location will furnish a sump-
tuous dining room and cock-
tail lounge, open from break-
fast to 2 a.m. and offering
complete parking facilities. As
usual, the new Boesky's will
serve complete breakfasts,
lunches, dinners, after-theater
snacks and will offer carry-out
service.
Boesky's began on Farns-
worth and Hastings in 1919. In
1924 it was moved to its pres-
ent location at 12th and Hazel-
wood, under the ownership of
Harry Boesky. Boesky's broth-
er Abe is general manager of
the restaurant that has be-
come "famous for fine food."
Boesky's growth literally is
synonymous with Detroit's.
From the small spot on Hast-
ings and Farnsworth to its
present popularity, Boesky's is
acknowledged as the major
rendezvous of Detroiters.
