Rabbi to Become
Narrator for 'King
Eastet4ner,
David' at Stratford

STRATFORD, Ontario—Rabbi
Reuben Slonim, noted Canadian
religious leader and writer, re-
places Jason Robards Jr. as nar-
rator in the dramatic oratorio
"King David," by Arthur Honeg-
ger, major work at the opening
concert of the Stratford Festi-
val's fourth annual season, next
Tuesday evening.
Based on the Old Testament
tale, Rabbi Slonim will relate
the story of King David ac-
cording to the King James ver-
sion, along with the Festival
Singers conducted by Elmer
Iseler.
In accepting the work's cen-
tral role. Rabbi Slonim com-
mented on the excitement of
being directly involved in an
artistic enterprise at Stratford.
His association with the Festi-
val dates back to 1956 when he
gave that season's opening ad-
dress.
Born in Winnipeg he has been
an active community leader and
executive in many Jewish and
inter-faith organizations, as well
as speaker and journalist on the
Middle East and Israel. -
One of the landmarks of mod-
ern music, "King David" was
written in 1921. It was an imme-
diate sensation and established
its 29-year-old composer as one
of the foremost musical talents
of the age.

bards Jr., star of "Henry IV,

posed by Louis Applebaum, dis-
tinguish the opening concert of
the Stratford Festival's fourth

I will rejoice in the Lord, I
will joy in the God of my sal-
vation. The Lord God is my
strength.—Hab. 3:18, 19.

STRATFORD, Ontario—"The
Winter's Tale," third produc-
tion of the Stratford Festival's
1958 repertoire, promises to be
the most lavish yet seen on its
open stage. Extra staff have
been added in properties and
wardrobe to make the 100 cos-
tumes and several hundred
props designed by Tanya Moi-
seiwitsch and inspired by the
colorful canvases of 17th cen-
tury painter Reubens.
Douglas Campbell, directing
his first play at Stratford, is
taking the full 40-member com-
pany through their paces when-
ever the stage is not occupied
with the two current produc-
tions, "Much Ado About Noth-
ing" and "Henry IV, Part Qne,"
which opened June 23. This
means little relaxation for Fes-
tival stars Eileen Herlie, Chris-
topher Plummer, Frances Hy-
land, and Jason Robards Jr.,
who are performing in eight
shows a week and rehearsing
Stratford's third in readiness for
its July 21 opening, as well as
its command performance be-
fore Her Royal Highness, Prin-
cess Margaret, on July 31.
