An enthusiastic response is
reported to the call for the
forthcoming Israel tenth anni-
versary celebration to be high-
lighted by a "Decade of Prog-
ress" banquet in behalf of the
Israel Bond drive, to be held
Wednesday, June 11, 6:30 p.m.,
in Temple Israel.
Yaacov T s u r, Ambassador
of Israel to France, will be
the guest of honor. John E.
L u r i e, prominent business
and civic leader, will serve
as the celebration chairman.
A 10th anniversary celebra-
tion committee has been for-
mulated, including Abe Kasle,
Louis Berry, Tom Borman,
Joseph Holtzman, David
Safran, Philip S toll in a n,

Irwin I. Cohn, Israel David-
son and Max Osnos.
The committee includes the
following w o 1T1 e n: Mesdames
Philip Helfman, Morris Adler,
Theodore Bargman, Tom Bor-
man, Philip Cutle r, Ben Z.
Freeman, Perry Goldman, Nor-
man Kanter, Joseph Katchke,
Harry Kay, Rachel Kurtzman,
George Liss, Charles Makie,
Charles Milan, Joseph Newman,
Abe Rosenberg, Joshua Sperka,
Max Stollman, Ralph Davidson,
Joseph Ehrlich and Milton
Mahler.
Pointing up the spiritual
significance of the celebration
to American Jewry, Detroit
rabbis have issued a call for
full community-wide participa-
tion among congregations and
individuals alike.
Among the organizations al-
ready taking an active role in
t h e meaningful celebration
plans are the following: Labor
Zionist Organization, Farband
Labor Zionist Order, Pioneer
Women, Zionist Organization of
D e t r o i t, Mizrachi, and the
Landsmanshaften.
Yaacov Tsur, who has served
as the Ambassador of Israel to
France since 1953, played a
key role in cementing a strong
bond of friendship between
Israel and France.

Detroit Religious Council to Meet
with Commander of Women's Army

The Religious Council of the
Detroit Israel Bond Committee
will meet with Col. Shoshana
Gershom, commanding officer
of the Women's Army of Is-
rael, at a lunch, Monday, 12:30
p.m., in the board room of
Adas Shalom. Synagogue.
Phillip Stollman, who again
has accepted the chairmanship

Mrs. JOSEPH NEWMAN, Na-
tional CHEN Day chairman,
made the presentation, and
expressed the hope that othe
women will be eligible to re-
ceive the award by the date
of National CHEN Day, this
Monday, when the command-
ing officer of the Women's
Army of Israel, Col. Shoshana
Gershom, will be the guest of
honor at a brunch and CHEN
awards ceremony at Adas
Shalom Synagogue.

Hebrew Schools to -Vie for Israel
10th Anniversary Greeting Award

"What will be your birthday
greeting to Israel on her Tenth
Anniversary?" is the question
Detroit Hebrew school children,
between the ages of 10 and 12,
will be asked to answer in 25
to 50 words. The contest is
being 'held to dramatize the
significance of the tenth anni-
versary celebration, in tribute to
Israel and to her economic up-
building through Israel Bonds.
The writer of the winning en-
try will be presented with an
inscribed world-famous, illu-
minated Szyk Haggadah. In ad-
dition to this, he or she will be
called upon to present the win-
ning greeting to Yaacov Tsur,
Israel's ambassador to France,
who will be here , as the guest
of honor at the Israel 10th an-
niversary celebration dinner on
June 11 at Temple Israel.

Mrs. Estelle Meyers was in-
stalled for the third time as
president of the . Los Angeles
Detroiter's Club, it was learned
here this week.
Others who were inducted at
a dinner-dance in the Norman-
die Hotel were Mesdames Ann
Miller and Dorothy Brody, vice-
presidents; Lena Abrams, Rose
Atler and Billie Gottlieb, secre-
taries; and Mitzie Applebaum,
treasurer. Mrs. Shirley Zimmer-
man was installing officer_

girls will display both the Amer-
ican and Israel flags to open
the celebration ; This group will
be selected on the basis of one
child from each Hebrew school
in Detroit.
Nominations of the birthday
greetings for the contest prize
will follow this procedure:
Each Hebrew school will se-
lect one final entry according to
its own standards. These entries
will then be judged by a com-
mittee of leading Jewish educa-
tors, who will pick the winning
birthday greeting.

Come Tuesday, Dr. Samuel
Halperin, newly promoted as-
sistant professor of political
science at Wayne State Univer-
sity, will be on his way to Israel
in quest of material for his
forthcoming book on the Amer-
ican Zionist movement.
Dr. Halperin, of 10011 Al-
bany, Oak Park, was awarded
a $2,000 graduate research fel-
lowship for the purposes of
examining the Weizmann Ar-
chives in Rehovot and the Cen-
tral Zionist archives in Jeru-
salem. The first American scho-
lar to do depth research into
these valuable records of the
formative years of Zionism, Dr.
Halperin will be in Israel for
two to three months.
His book, "American Zionism;
Building a Political Interest
Group," has already been ac-
cepted by the Wayne State Uni-
versity Press editorial board for
publication next year, after it is
completed.
