Moshe Sharett Attacks
Soviet Premier for His
Anti-Jewish Allegations
TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The anti-
Jewish sentiments expressed by
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrush-
chev in his statement to the
Paris newspaper Le Figaro were
sharply denounced by Moshe
Sharett, former Premier of Is-
rael, in an address at a mass
meeting of immigrants from
Russia held here.
Speaking in Russian, Sharett
expressed astonishment that
such statements as those in the
Khrushchev interview in Le
Figaro could be made by people
who claimed to be the most pro-
gressive. He added that the
Khrushchev statement actually
demonstrated five points which
refuted all assertions made by
former Soviet leaders with re-
gard to Jews under Commu-
nism.
Sharett said the points were:
1. Khrushchev in effect acknowl-
edged the existence of a Jewish
nation; 2. He indicated that the
Jewish nation remained unique
in its communal appearance; 3.

lem exists in the Soviet Union;
4. He also admitted that the
problem was not solved; 5. He
acknowledged that the only so-
lution of the Jewish problem

and national independence.
Sharett said that the situation
of the Jews in the Soviet Union
continued to deteriorate and

at the same time constituted a
source of danger.
The meeting called upon the
Soviet government to permit
Jews to emigrate from the So-

Jews in Russia be permitted to
maintain their own cultural and
communal life. The rally also
sent a message of greetings to
Jews in the Soviet Union.
Jordan Concentrates
Tanks to Counter Parade
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Jordan-controlled Radio Ramal-
lah announced that Jordanian
tanks and heavy equipment
were being brought into the Old
City of Jerusalem to counter
the arrival in new Jerusalem of
Israeli troops and equipment to
participate in an Independence
Day parade.
The- official communique read
over Radio Ramallah said that
Jordanian Premier Samir Rifai
had informed United Nations
truce chief Maj. Gen. Carl C.
von Horn of the Jordanian de-
cision and that the Jordan gov-
ernment had registered with
Dr. Francisco Urrutia during
his last visit here a protest
against the Israeli action.
This sudden turn on Jordan's
part filled Israeli authorities
with dismay, since they had
given the UN truce set-up here
ample advance notice of its in-
tended actions and had not been
told of any objections. Even the
Jordanian communique ad-
mitted that Gen. von Horn had
told the Jordanians, in reply to
their last minute protest, that
he understood the Israeli equip-
ment was being brought to Je-
rusalem for decorative, not of-
fensive, purposes. He was un-
able to intervene, he told the
Arabs, because the Israeli ac-
tion was standard practice which
had hitherto not been contested.
Israeli troops continued comb-
ing the dunes north of Migdal

ously wounded an Israeli civi-
lian, Itzhak Izack, a recent im-
migrant. Izack had been hired
by a Migdal woman to bring hay
from her field to a distant barn.
She and her two children were
'in the wagon with Izack when
two marauders sprang from the
dunes and shot the immigrant,
but spared the woman and chil-
dren.

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
Israel Cabinet approved Pre-
mier David Ben-Gurion's reply
to Soviet Premier Nikita
Khrushchev's plea to Israel,
among other nations, to support
the Soviet call for an interna-
tional ban on further nuclear
bomb tests and the production
of nuclear weapons.
Ben - Gurion reportedly sug-
gested that the principle of dis-
armament be applied to the
Middle East region to diminish
the possibility of an outbreak
of war in the area. The gist of
the reply is thought to be: Is-
rael favors the banning of nu-
clear weapons tests but believes
that this can only be put into
effect by a decision among the
Big Powers.
In a repercussion of the Mos-
cow-Belgrade rift, the Israeli
Communist delegation which
was to participate - in the forth-
coming national convention of
the Yugoslav Communist Party
cancelled its flight plans at the
last minute. The Israeli Com-
munists informed the Yugoslav
delegation in Israel that its ac-
tion was in line with Moscow's
boycott of the Belgrade meet-
ing.
However, an Israeli Mapam
delegation left for the Yugoslav
capital to attend the parley.
Mapam political secretary N.
Peled told a press conference
that Israel has high hopes that
Yugoslavia will contribute to
neutralizing the Middle East
and possibly will be able to help
promote direct Arab - Israel
peace talks.
