Vatican Pessimistic
on Arabs' Transfer

_Aground the World...

A Digest of World Jewish Happenings, from Dis-
patches of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and Other
News Gathering Media.

ROME, (JTA) — Osservatore
Romano, newspaper voice of
the Vatican, said that political
and economic policy was slow-
ing unification of the Arab
world. The Vatican organ was
especially referring to a re-
port of a contemplated "migra-
tion" of Palestine refugees
from Jordan to jobs and land
in Iraq, now part of the newly-
merged federation.
The newspaper said that such
a move would be considered by
many Arabs a victory for Israel
which, it added, had refused to
"return the Palestinians to their
-homes." No Arab leader would
expose himself to the accuse;
tion that he favored the Israeli
cause, even indirectly, Osserva-
tore Romano said.

WASHINGTON—The Jewish War Veterans' National Com-
mander Benjamin H. Chasin assailed the Administration plan
for action by Congress that would- make American taxpayers
"assume double liability for former Nazi assets valued at over
one-half billion dollars" and pointed out that the German gov-
ernment agreed by treaty to reimburse its own nationals in
return for America's agreement not to ask for either reparations
or repayment of sums advanced before the 1952 Bonn treaty .. .

Mapai Leaders Hear Ben-Gurion
Outline Relations with Big Powers

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A ser-
ies of long-range predictions
involving Israel's relations with
various world powers was pre-
sented by Premier David Ben-
Gurion to a closed meeting of
Mapai leaders in Tel Aviv.
The discussions of the reali-
ties of Israel's foreign policy
took place in a Mapai "ideo-
logical circle" where one of
the participants was recently
retired Army Chief of Staff
Brig. Moshe Dayan.
Ben-Gurion reportedly made
the following points:
1. There is no likelihood in
the foreseeable future of any
basic change in Soviet policy
toward Israel.
2. There is little chance that
Communist China will revise its
attitude toward Israel.
3. The United States is ex-
tending Israel important, multi-
faceted aid, but it will not sup-
ply arms.
4. There is no sign of India's
entering into diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel, despite prom-
ises to do so.
5. The attitude in Britain
toward Israel is changing in a
favorable direction, but the
British government's Middle
East policy is still determined
by its oil interests.
6. The unification of West-
ern Europe increases the im-
portante of that area—particu-
larly Germany—for Israel. In
that connection, Israel's close
ties with France are of utmost
importance and will remain so
in the future.
7. Europe is a source of
arms for Israel, but should also

John Calvin had written some
interesting commentaries o n
books of the Old Testament. In
the selections from the works of
John Calvin, published by the
Liberal Arts Press (153 W.
72nd, N. Y. 23),. are included
his commentaries on Genesis,
Isaiah and the Psalms.
In these essays, he shows a
good knowledge of Hebrew and
he incorporates a number of
Hebraic terms in his evaluation
of the texts.
His work, of course, is chris-
tological.
Another Library of Liberal
Arts book just published con-
tains the Unitarian Christianity
essays by William Ellery Chan-
ning, edited by Irving H. Bart-
lett. The more liberal attitude
of Unitarianism towards Jews
in the present time seems to be
absent from the Channing es-
says.

BOMBAY—Y. B. Chaban, Chief Minister of Bombay, said at
a reception given him by the Zionist Federation that the Jewish
community of India has produced many eminent scientists and
scholars, and he spoke of the Jews' loyalty in the identification
with India's- interests . . .

MONTREAL—Canadian Jewish communities have submitted
statements to local school boards requesting that religion not
be taught in public schools, and in Brantford, Ontario, a brief
was submitted pointing out that such instruction would in-
variably turn out to be a type of Christian teaching to which
Jews cannot subscribe .. .
