Hollywood's Interest in Israel

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Final
agreement is expected late this
week on a $15,000,000 loan to
Israel by the United States De-
velopment Loan Fund. The
credit would be used for the
erection of power development
projects in Israel.

Hollywood is becoming in-
terested in Israel as a theme
for moving pictures. One of. the
reports is that the book about
the Sinai campaign, "100 Hours
to Suez," will in-the-not-too-
distant-future find its way on
to the silver screen.
Certainly the past couple of
years has shown a .c..urge of
interest by many Hollywood
stars in Israel. When Lauren
Bacall told Miami newspaper-
men that, "As a Jewess, I
am proud of Israel," she was
voicing the feelings of many
another Jewish screen star.
The psychology of the actor
may explain the interest of
Hollywood in Israel. In a
western picture; the actor may
be the marshall representing
the law. In another; as in De
Milles "Ten Commandments,"
he may be something very dif-
ferent, a Moses leading his
people in the wilderness.
In Israel, drama and life
are not sepafated. Israel's pres-
ent life is drama. She does not
have to simulate the border
troubles and similar clashes
which produced the "westerns."
Israel is drama and is of
interest to the actor.
There are other reasons why
individual actors may respond
to the Israeli stimulus. Shelly
Winters told the recent Israel
bond conference of her visit to
Israel, how she had walked the
streets of Israel, feeling that
she belonged. Perhaps only a
Jew could understand the
peace which she described. In
Israel, she rejoined her people,
but oddly enough, for the first
time she lost her separateness
from humanity, which Zionists
are often accused of fostering.
In Israel, she did not have to
explain herself. She could be
a natural human being. She
was like other people, all of
whom can point to some place
where they are a majority.
Shelly Winters has been one
of the most inspiring speakers
before Israel bond audiences.
There are a number of other
Hollywood stars who are work-
ing as devotedly for Israel
bonds. Eddie Cantor, like Abou
ben Adhem, "leads them all."
Few American Jews have
worked as indefatigably as he
for Israel bonds and none has
worked more dramatically.

performance was over con-
versing with a speaker who had
just come from Israel. Benny
was anxious to find out all
about Israel.
Dore Schary, until recently
one of the top men of Holly-
wood, now acclaimed for his
play about Roosevelt, "Sunrise
at Campobello," is another
great Israel fan. Schary was
the author of the script • for
last year's Israel bond Hanu-
kah festival.
The list would be incomplete
without mentioning some of
the non-Jewish Hollywood per-
sonalities who have given their
services gratis for Israel festi-
vals, such stars as the late
Louis Calhern and Cary Grant,
Ralph Bellamy and Rod Steiger.

The fans of moviedom ac-
claim Edward G. Robinson for
his gangster fictures, but in
ISraeli circles they say: "If he
is a gangster, oh that the
world might be full of them."
Robinson has a very profound
and intellectual interest in the
upbuilding of Israel, which is
perhaps not unnatural, con-
sidering that in his youth he
considered becoming a rabbi.
Jack Benny, "the skin flint"
of film and television, is any-
thing but that in real life and
as regards Israel is most gen-
erous in his services. His de-
votion goes very deep. Re-
cently at an Atlantic City
Israel bond function, he sat
many hours after the public
