Two deviations from the Cen-
ter Symphony Orchestra's orig-
inal program last Monday eve-
ning served only to stir the or-
chestra to greater heights.
The fact that the symphony
usually plays its concerts on
Tuesday did not prevent most
of the seats in the Hyman C.
Broder Auditorium of the Davi .
son Jewish Center from being
filled.
And the substitution of Paul
Olefsky as cello soloist in place
of the ailing Joseph - Schuster
certainly calls for no apologies
by the orchestra.
Olefsky. who Is solo cellist
with the Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra, completely enthralled
his audience 'with the beautiful
and stirring Cello Concerto in

Sammy Barsh

A Minor (Opus 33) by Saint-
Saens.
He was brought back for a
half .dozen bows and two en-
cores, including a most interest-
ing piece by the contemporary
composer Kodaly, which had
Olefsky performing a variety of
tricks on his instrument. The
other number was a shortened
form of a movement from a
Sonata by Bach.
The orchestra, under the mas-
terful d i r e c t i o n of Julius
Chajes, opened the program
with the first U.S. performance
of Roger Vuataz's "Suite Opus
53, No. 2 for Strings."
In spite of the attempts at
modernistic dissonance, t h e
piece emerges more as a melod-
ious air which is quite refresh-
ing. The Symphony played
three movements from' the
Suite.
The orchestra's major work
for the evening was Mendels-
sohn'S romantic Symphony • Op.
56, No. 3 in A Minor (Scotch),
which was done superbly.
In this piece, it becomes ob-
vious how well Chajes has
drilled his musicians. Not one
cue was missed, while the or-
chestra displayed its talents
well in each of the movements.
The next Symphony perfor-
mance, on April 29, will feature
as soloist Mischa Kottler play-
ing Chopin's Piano Concerto No.
2 in F Minor.
