General Tolkowsky to Speak Tuesday at
Official Opening of 1958 Allied Campaign

Dr. Richard Hertz, Max Fisher
on Program; Batya, to Entertain

General Dan Tolkowsky, bril-
liant and daring young com-
mander of Israel's Air Force,
will speak at the formal open-
ing of the 1958 Allied Jewish
Campaign next Tuesday, 8:15
p.m., at Temple Beth El.
Head of the Israel Air Force
since May, 1953, General Tol-
kowsky has seen it grow from a
time when it consisted of a few
battered gas-engine Spitfires of
World War II vintage into a
modern jet-powered striking
force. He was in command
during the Sinai Campaign in
1956, when Israeli Mysteres
drove Egyptian Soviet - made
MIGS from the skies.
Batya, Israel's favorite sing-
ing and dramatic star, will be
featured on the opening meet-
ing program.
Dr. Richard C. Hertz, spirit-
ual leader of Temple Beth El
and Max M. Fisher, chairman
of the 1958 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, will address the meeting.
the Center Symphoney under
the direction of Julius Chajes,
will perform.
General Tolkowsky is one of
the authentic voices of Israel
and is typical of the great po-
tential of the young nation's
future leadership. Like all of
Israel's military leaders, he is
a professional soldier only be-
cause of the exigencies of Isra-
el's security needs. His bent
and training is that of an engi-

neer and engineering is still his
first love. He hopes some day
to be able to devote his full
time to it, but in the meanwhile
has reconciled himself to a ca-
reer in the forefront of Israel's
defense set-up, because of his
country's need for security.
Born in Tel Aviv in 1921,. Dan
Tolkowsky, like many others of
Israel's young crop of leaders,
joined the Haganah in boyhood,
in 1936, when Arab riots were
sweeping the country. Young
Tolkowsky was a Haganah run-
ner, carrying messages on his
bicycle from unit to unit, from
HQ to outlying defense posts.
He went to London to study
at the Imperial College , of Sci-
ence, from which he was gradu-
ated in 1941, earning first class
honors. He immediately joined
