Deny Immigration
of Japanese Jews

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
Jewish Agency denied re-
ports that immigration from
Japan to Israel was expect-
ed. "There is no truth in
such reports," an Agency
spokesman said.
He made it clear that the
Jewish Agency received no
applications from Japan for
immigration - and that "it has
absolutely no plans for dis-
patching missions to Japan
regarding immigration."

by-products of American Israel Paper Mills, Ltd., Hadera,
Israel. The Middle East's first major paper mill, presently un-
dergoing a ten million dollar expansion program, provides
Israel with paper for newsprint, bond paper, kraft and sulphite
papers and book paper. The expansion program, scheduled for
completion in 1959, includes construction of a new pulp mill
and installation of a second paper machine. This will double
the present annual production to 37,000 tons annually, equal
to about 75% of Israel's total present annual paper con-
sumption.

COME ONE

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Is-
rael enjoys a considerably great-
er per capita income than any
of the 19 other new, indepen-
dent states that have emerged
since World War II, according
to a summary presentation on
the Mutual Security Program,
published by the U. S. Govern-
ment. Israel is listed as having
a per capita income of $510
annually. The next highest per
capita income for a new state
is $310 annually for Malaya.
Israel's gross national product
is estimated by official U. S.
economists at $722 for 1957.
That figure is almost twice as
much as the next highest gross
national product of a Near East-
ern state; Lebanon's gross na-
tional product is listed as $372.
The Israeli gross national prod-
uct is more than twice as high
as that of either Greece or Tur-
key.
A number of national Jewish
leaders were named among 200
leading citizens who have ac-
cepted sponsorship of the Com-
mittee for International Eco-
nomic Growth, it was announced
by Eric Johnston, chairman of
the committee which will func-
tion as a private, non-partisan
group to coordinate and channel
information about the Mutual
Security Program to national
organizations and the general
public.

G.

V. Leopold Urges
Deadline Adherence
on German Claims

April 1 is the final deadline
for filing of all claims against
the German government for in-
demification for losses suffered
at the hands of the third Reich
for reasons of race, religion
nationality or political convic-
tion.
To meet this deadline, last-
minute claims can be filed with
the German Consulate in De-
troit.
In an article in the Michigan
Bar Journal, attorney G. Ver-
non Leopold lists the categories
under which compensation may
be drawn. They include loss of
life of certain near relatives,
upon whom claimant was de-
pendent, impairment of health
and limb, loss of impairment
of civil liberties and freedom,
damage to property or wealth
and discriminatory payments
etc., damage to vocational pro-
gress, damage to economic
progress, interuption of edu-
cation and immediate assist-
ance to returnees.
Certain residence require-
ments must also be met.
