TEL AVIV — If the Israel
army still follows British mili-
tary traditions, it is the respon-
sibility chiefly of its new Chief
of Staff, Maj. Gen. Chaim Las-
kov.
Until recently, this Palestine-
trained, deeply dedicated soldier
was head of Israel's Southern
Commany. Fiercely dedicated
to the proposition that Israel
can maintain her military
superiority over overwhelming
odds, he was one of the major
architects and executors of the
1956 Sinai campaign in which
Israel soundly whipped a nu-
merically superior, better armed
Egyptian force in less than a
week.
Born in Russia in April, 1919,
Laskov came to Palestine at the
age of five, and settled with his
parents in Haifa. Six years later
he was tragically faced with
Palestinian reality when his
father was killed by Arab ma-
rauders.
By the time Laskov completed
his studies in the Haifa second-
ary school he had already been
a member of the Haganah for
almost 10 years. He climbed the
command ladder in the Haganah
and was one of the chief in-
structors in a variety of subjects
related to combat training.
In 1940 he joined the British
forces and two years later was
promoted from the ranks to of-
ficer and transferred to a train-
ing unit. When the Jewish Bri-
gade was established in 1944 he
became commander of the coin-
