LaMed, Shudofsky Prescott to udge Book Fair Contest

Louis LaMed, Dr. Joseph
Prescott, and Dr. Maurice M.
Shudofsky have been named
judges for the Teme Skully
Award Contest for essays on a
Jewish theme, sponsored by the
Jewish Community Center, in
conjunction with the sixth an-
nual Jewish Book Fair, to be
held Nov. 23-25 at the Davison
branch.
All three men are well-known
figures in Detroit educational
and literary circles.
LaMed, founder of the Louis
LaMed Foundation for the Ad-
vancement of Hebrew and Yid-
dish Literature, also established
the LaMed professorship for
Jewish studies at Wayne State
University, which played a part
in the development• of a de-
partment of Semitic languages
and literatures at that institu-
tion.
LaMed also is chairman of
the Midrasha, a member of the
National Jewish Council Teach-
er's Board of License and of
the executive committee of Na-

fornia State Federation of La-
bor has sharply criticized the
practice by Saudi Arabia in bar-
ring American military person-

A resolution adopted at the
annual state convention here
declared that "Saudi Arabia,
Egypt and other Arab nations
are allowed to dictate to the
United States which Americans
shall not serve in the Armed
Forces of the United States, sta-

court has sentenced five Poles
to terms of imprisonment vary-

Kramer, conference chairman,
sessions will open with a
brunch at 10 a.m. Delegates

communities in Michigan will

The entire conference theme
will be oriented to discussing
the tenth anniversary celebra-
tion of the re-establishment of
Israel, in which the Jewish Na-
tional Fund Council will par-
ticipate, together with the Joint
Committee of the Jewish Com-
munity Council—Zionist Coun-
cil, which is planning this com-
munity-wide event.
A feature of the conference
will be the ceremoniel com-
memoration of the fifth anni-
versary of the death of -Dr.
Chaim Weizmann, Israel's first
president.
At the plenary session, be-
ginning at 2 p.m., to which
both delegates and the public
at large are invited, there will
be a rich musical program.
During the day there will be
panel discussions. Special ar-
rangements are being made for
Landmanshaften, religious and
youth groups, among others, to
participate in planning JNF
activities.

Wisconsin, is assistant profes-
sor in the department of Semi-
tic languages and literature at
WSU. He has also served as
chairman of the faculty of the
Midrasha.
The contest is made possible
through a bequest of Harry
Skully. The competition, open
to all Jewish youth 16-22 in the
United States, Canada and Mex-
ico, offers prizes for essays
dealing with a Jewish theme,
such as Jewish history, folklore
and modern Israel.
